Today is Confederate Memorial Day in Florida.  Per Florida Statutes 683.01(j), April 26 is a Legal Holiday in Florida.

Nine states - Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, Lousiana, North Carolina, and South Carolina - have an official observance day to honor our Confederate Heroes.

Our Heroes and Our Flags

Confederate Memorial Day per Florida Statutes

Many brave men from Florida went to Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia to fight with General Lee, General Jackson, James Longstreet, Jeb Stuart, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and other great military leaders.

Florida Confederate Troops defeated the Union soldiers at Olustee near Lake City, and they crushed the invading Northerners at The Battle of Natural Bridge, just south of Tallahassee.

On Confederate Memorial Day, wreaths will be laid upon the graves of Confederate Soldiers, and flowers will be placed upon the statues and markers in front of many Florida courthouses.

A wreath will be placed upon the Monument to the Confederacy that is on the front lawn of the Florida Capitol here in Tallahassee.

Today is Confederate Memorial Day in Florida. We remember and honor our brave ancestors who fought to defend their country, The Confederate States of America.

Awww Geez.  Why can't Colorado observe this holiday.  These photos are just so cool.  I love the one with all the older gentlemen standing in front of the flag.

Fred I wasn't aware that Today is Confederate Memorial Day. April 26 is a Legal Holiday in Florida.  I'll have to ask my Alabama wife if she is aware of this holiday in her neck of the woods.  Great history and photos my friend!

Edward and Celia, as you know, the westernmost battle of the Civil War was at Picacho Peak just north of Tucson, in 1862.

Belinda, that photo is from the Alabama Department of Archives and History.  It is the last known Reunion of Confederate Veterans at the Capitol in Montgomery, Alabama.  The photo was entered into the Alabama Archives in 1944.

Standing, left to right: General William Banks of Houston, Texas; General W. W. Alexander of Rockhill, South Carolina; General J. D. Ford of Marshall, Texas; General T. H. Dowling of Atlanta, Georgia; General James W. Moore of Selma, Alabama; Colonel W. H. Culpepper of Atlanta, Georgia; and General W. M. Buck of Muskogee, Oklahoma.  Seated in front is Dr. R. A. Gwynne of Birmingham, Alabama.

Michael, thank you.   It is an awesome day!

John,  Alabama originally celebrated Confederate Memorial Day on April 26th, but they moved it to the 4th monday of April.  They take a true holiday - State Offices are closed for the long weekend.  Alabama declares April to be Confederate Memorial MONTH.

BTW, read my comment to Belinda above...  the Veterans in the B&W photo are on the Capitol steps in Montgomery, Alabama.

Florida has a long list of interesting legal holidays.  Guess it is politically incorrect to dare close a government building or school to celebrate them anymore.
