YES!  I AM A CYNIC!!

Technology will, sooner or later, make this Good Semaritan's good works obsolete.

I fully expect to see parking meters that automatically send out fines to owners of vehicles parked the second a meter goes "red".

No ticket required.  No meter-maid or police officer writing tickets and sticking them under the windshield wiper.  Just an automatic ticket generated by small cameras installed at a strategic location to photograph the license plate.  It works for speed cameras.  No reason it won't work for parking tickets.

I sure hope I'm wrong.

Would You Be Willing to Spend 25 Cents to Buy a Stranger 10 Minutes?

As we go through our busy days we are usually so wrapped up in our next appointment; what we will cook for dinner; what time the kids have to be picked up.... the list goes on.....that we can forget that there are others around us.

parking meter-delray beachThis morning as Larry and I were at the end of our morning walk at Delray Beach, we saw a young man going along the sidewalk and feeding the meters with the red  “Expired” sign flashing in the window.  He stopped at each meter, checked the status, then dropped in a quarter.

It was such an unexpected and kind gesture it made me wonder how many of us would have spent a quarter to buy a stranger 10 minutes of time.  (In Delray, beach parking is 25 cents for 10 minutes.)

Larry and I have made this “mad dash” on more than a few mornings.  You set your watch and know when you must “feed the meter” only to be stopped by a friend for a quick hello and chat.  Or on those occasions when we saw the flashing red on meters near our car, we were always so busy talking  or wrapped up in our thoughts, that it never occurred to either one of us to buy that person an extra 10 minutes.

I hope that next time I’ll step out of my own little world and be better prepared to perform a Random Act of Kindness.

Random Acts of Kindness are out there.... we just have to learn to look for them.

Unfortunately you're right on the mark; cash strapped cities and counties are going to find as many ways as possible to generate extra money. I just wonder how much freedom are we willing to give-up in that pursuit: cameras on every corner, meters in cars to log our mileage usage, smart phone tracking, drones flying over cities, etc..

Have an AWESOME day!

I agree with you Lenn.  Our toll roads here in Florida will take a photo of your cars license plate should you run a toll and the bill is automatically sent to the registered owner.  No muss, No fuss and No Police chase.  What would be a great inovation is if the parking meters could scan your "Sun Pass" or other pre-paid toll system payment device so there are no violations.

If the municipal budgets stay tight, that boy better stock up on dollar bills instead of quarters.

Lenn, you are so cynical these days! Technology will always lead the authorities to assume more authority and gather more revenue.

Michael.  I see it coming.

Michael G.  We have that with one of our toll roads.  It automatically charges your "little box" with no booths.

Doug.  I expect it soon.

Gary. Sadly, they are way ahead of us.

You know I've been thinking about that autoticketing too over the last few yrs.  Scary.  But, I love this nice gesture and will need to head over to Kathy's...later.  I have to run to an appt.

Lenn, here in MD, we have these new patrol cars that automatically read all the tags around them using the newest technology out there and automatically checks with records to see if you are legal or not. .while the police office officer sits in the car and waits for the computer to warn him about an expired tag or a stolen car.. .amazing technology that I experience first hand for not having my vehicle emission up to date.

Oh you are not wrong...I actually hadn't thought about that idea. We already have meters that don't take coins, only credit cards and one option is to automatically add if it reaches the end of the meter, up to the time limit. I like this feature.

Fernando.   Sad, sad.  We are truly in the Nanny/Police state.

Karen.  Great until you go over the limit and get charged a $38 overdraft fee.  Cheaper than  a parking ticket I suppose.

The cynic in you is probably spot on with your assumption that meter violations will be automated before long. If it can be automated and save the cost of paying a "meter maid" it's bound to happen.... sadly.

Michael.  HA!  It's inevitable.

Craig.  I agree.  You'll get a notice in the mail with the fine along with a photo of the expired meter.  Just like the speed cameras.

Ouch.

Lenn- thanks for the reblog.  The store owners along Atlantic are battling because some want meters put in and half don't.  When the city first installed meters many of them didn't work.  I love my gadgets but at some point, if not already, we've become over automated!!  Self check-out at some places works well, and at others it's a Pain in the behind.

Kathy.  It's a pain in the grocery store and I refuse to participate.  If they want my money, they'll check me out.  I was in a food store a couple of years ago that had nothing but self checkout open.  I left a cart full of groceries on the floor and went to another store.
