First off, the kids most likely had no idea of what they had.

Can you imagine them calling out...

Usually the little ones scent glands don't develope for a couple of months...but they there is mom scent on them.

Randi, I saw a family of 7 baby skunks in the parking lot at an office where I worked in Illinois...you can bet I staed clear of them. I've had to use tomato juice on my dogs more than once.
