Walking Around Summit, NJ

Walking around Summit, NJ you can see some unusual things that you might not expect!  There are the usual dogs and cats and the more unusual sightings of goats, wild turkeys, foxes and the occasional black bear!  There is a man here who walks his goat frequently along Springfield Avenue and up and down the residential side streets, including past our house.  This goat is very obedient (which I understand is unusual for a goat) and usually walks without a leash, following closely behind its owner.

Sometimes a wild turkey wanders into town and causes havoc!  There are quite a number of them living in the nearby wooded areas and occasionally one finds its way onto Springfield Avenue, right in the center of town, and struts around looking very lost.  This usually draws a crowd and confuses the turkey even more.  I have seen small flocks of wild turkeys on many occasions so it is a miracle that they don’t “get lost” more often.  I see a number of foxes, usually early in the morning or at dusk.  One home I listed had a family of foxes living in the back yard and I would nearly always see them when I visited the sellers or showed their home to buyers. In recent years Summit has also had several visits from black bears which usually cause the City to issue a code red alert.  With so many woods in and around the town it is not surprising that we see them here.  One black bear decided to visit Summit during the annual food drive last year and caused quite a sensation as it was tracked from street to street.

Summit (formerly known also as Turkey Hill) is located approximately 25 miles west of New York City, and is accessible by road, rail (Penn Station, NY or Hoboken, NJ) and automobile (via Interstate 78) in approximately 35-50 minutes.  With top-ranked schools and excellent shopping and recreational amenities, Summit is a popular location for buyers looking for easy access to Manhattan, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Boston and is approximately 15 minutes’ drive from Newark Liberty International Airport.  Apart from all its great features one of the best things about this location is enjoying some unusual animal sightings just by walking around Summit.
