Live With Less in 2008

By

Why not resolve to live with less in the New Year? It seems to me that either you are a purger or a saver (also known as a collector or even a hoarder in the most extreme cases). I happen to be a purger. I do not tend to get attached to many things. I am known to be ruthless about discarding--just ask my family. When my son leaves for summer camp, I go through his room like a tornado getting rid of clothing, toys and other items that have been long forgotten or outgrown. Rarely, does he even notice the missing items on his return. Occassionally, I regret getting rid of things. Usually it is something that I think should have some sentimental value for me, but really doesn't.

Clutter is big business. Just look at the number of storage unit rental companies popping up. What about the number of junk hauling businesses and television shows like "Clean Sweep?" Think about the categories of "stuff" that goes unused in your household either because it has outlived its usefulness or you never used it in the first place. Books, videos, clothing, shoes, computers, software, electronics, furniture, tools, housewares, appliances, latex paint, eye-wear, toys and sports equipment are a few that come to mind. Instead of throwing these items away, find a local organization that will accept your donations. Chances are, you will be helping someone less fortunate in the process. Many organizations will even provide complimentary pick up of your items. Otherwise, consider having a neighborhood yard sale or sell your items at a local consignment or thrift shop. Of course, there is always the internet if you have the know how to sell items on-line. Below are a few resources for donating your used items. Some are local to the Philadelphia area.

I challenge you to periodically purge in 2008. Work from your simplest (closet) to more challenging (garage)projects. Be ruthless about discarding. If you haven't worn it or used it in a year, get rid of it! Set realistic deadlines for yourself to get the job done. If you are selling your house in the New Year, start purging now. Why move it with you?  Reducing and recycling can be a liberating thing

I purge my closet at least twice a year and try to purge my desk about 4 times a year. I always feel better after doing this and my life becomes more productive. I always vow not to let it happen but it always seems too.

Timely post Linda!

Karen and I have been going through the storage areas, file cabinets, desks, closets and have cleared a ton!  We helped to fill a huge semi that hauled warm clothes to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.  My shredder has been working overtime, and I may be able to eliminate a whole file cabinet!

Happy New (Clutter-free) year!

The New Year is always a GREAT time to get rid of all the clutter.  It gives a fresh start to the year.

Thanks for your comments. Seems we are all in agreement (expect for maybe Pat). We really do have too much stuff. Hopefully 2008 will be our opportunity to get it under control.
