Nevada made Las Vegas an official city in 1911. Shortly after the organization of Las Vegas the Great Depression hit. Fortunately for Las Vegas the construction of the Hoover (originally the Boulder) Dam 1931 couldn't have come at a better time. The Hoover Dam gave Las Vegas stability during a time when it was most needed. The project brought jobs, city development, and large amounts of Government funding. During the same year Nevada legalized gambling.
