Updated Photos on the Building of The San Salvador, Replica Ship

Back in November, 2011, I wrote a post about the beginning of the construction of the ship replica, San Salvadore being built here in San Diego. I dropped by the construction site on Shelter Island yesterday and observed the construction continuing and I had mentioned that I would give you periodic updates of this construction.

As you can see it is begining to take shape. As the ship building contunies, I will contiunue to update the photos and when completed, I will have a wonderful collection of photos of how this ship took it's completed form.

Hi Kristine, This replica will join several others of these old saiiling vessels ( tall ships ) and I can't wait for the next stage for the photo op. It is an awesome undertaking and there are many volunteers that will bring this to reality.

William, That style of shipbuilding has to be an almost forgotten art.  Interesting to watch it come together, thanks for being our eyes on the scene!

William, there is a lot going on in these photos and I'll bet the activity has been a real showstopper for passersby.  I could watch this kind of stuff for hours.

What a fascinating project that has to be.  As much as I thought I knew about California history, I did not know the San Salvadore was the first European ship to reach America's West Coast.  How did that fact escape me?  I guess I have been far too focused on the California Gold Rush these past few years.

William, thank you for sharing these photographs with us.  It never occurred to me what an undertaking it was to build a boat or ship.  The curved wood in itself is fascinating.

Hi Sheila, What makes it even more interesting is that they are following the old shipbuilder process even including the old tools that were used. Here is one of the ship builders using the wooden mallet for setting the metal joiners.

Hi Mona, They have the area mostly fenced off and admission to watch them build and get a guide to explain things is $5. It is indeed fascinating and as the ship progresses I will be back to get more photos of the process.

Hi Myrl, There is so much history and the idea is that we each  bring to the table what we know. Isn't it amazing what he have all learned from each other. I never get over just how amazing all this is here in the Rain.

Hi Sheila, I love it when when people come back to read the response. This building process keeps to the integrity of the project. I think it so facinating to see and understand what actually goes into it. In the end, San Diegans will appreciate this ship so much more.

Hi Sondra, When I do my posts, they are usually things that I recognize that most either don't know about or might like to know. I do less of the market reports these days and choose these kinds of posts because I learn so much more and of course when I can take photos it pleases me all the more. Thank you for dropping over and appreciating what makes this building of a replica ship so interesting and unique. The curved wood is a painstaking process and I would imagine the most costly of building this ship.

William - what a cool idea of following the long process of construction, and have photos capturing the stages of it taking shape

Hi Jon, I thought it would be great to have this recorded. I sure others have or will be doing it for the Maritime Museum but who of the public would ever get to see them. With the blogs, they are here and there will be so many more as it gets further along. Thanks for appreciating these. This area is about 40 minutes away but I will try and go as often as possible to get the details as a photographic record.

William,

Ship building is such an art and a science! I've always been fascinated by how something this massive can float and take people out to sea to see new worlds. The people who build ships are architectural geniuses!

You've capatured the spirit of the high seas and I commend you for always creating tasteful blog posts. Everything you do fascinates me.
