Eco Desigantions and Education

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Hearthside

I am looking to take some ECO education courses in 2008 and possibly obtain some level of certification.   Someone provided me with the link to ecobroker.com today - I was wondering if there are others that I should also be looking at.  I was a bit disappointed in my initial look at the few resources (affiliate wise) that the site offered - granted I haven't really looked that far into the site.

After getting involved in one of our local green subdivisions, I feel it is important to learn more about this.  I would really like to become involved in helping existing homeowners think green when remodeling, renovating and even just preparing their homes for sale.  I'm going at this from a "greed" standpoint as well as "green".  I think that sellers that can offer reduction in utility costs will have a lot to offer buyers.  The homes that we are marketing offer 30-40% reduction in utilities now and the percentage will likely increase in years to come.

I'm looking for courses, designations etc..

I am also interested on how having an eco designation has helped your business?  Any hindrances?  Do clients assume you only do eco related real estate (hopefully this will soon be the norm).  I'm still going ahead with my plan, just wondering...

Thanks,

Judi

Judi, I completed the EcoBroker® certification and I'm very happy with both the level of information and the direction that the classes take in helping both agents and clients with green issues and benefits. If you want to look into the field of green housing but don't know if you want to spend the money on the designation, NACHI (National Association of Certified Home Inspectors) has a great program that is free. It does not have the marketing/real estate agent outlook that EcoBroker has, but it does have a great amount of info that will be helpful, and the price is right!

Also right now you would be the first EcoBroker® in your town, maybe in your county (I don't know PA well enough to tell). You can check this at Search for your local EcoBroker®

I also have been looking hard into taking this course, but still have yet to pull the trigger.  But I still have yet to hear anyone that says that they took it and were not happy that they did.

Personally I have taken a few designation courses that I thought were a complete waiste of time and money, but the EcoBroker course really does look well put together and well respected by those that have taken it.

So all my best to you and your business.  But all in all it really does look like one of the better options out there.

Michael - double thanks.  I'm going to check out NACHI for right now and put the other in my education plans for 2008.  PA has several but not in this area - I also am licensed in NJ.

DJ - pullin the trigger is a good term!  Right now I think it is going to have to be planned.  First step is to pay the 2008 dues.  Outside of getting my broker's license and ABR, I've been very careful on designations.  We had a debate on this last friday between the two top agents - one for lots of designations, the other not.  It's a balance.
