0 Comments . . . Ever Wonder Why?

Part of my morning routine is to get a cup of coffee - You know that magical morning elixir of life, boot the computer, and go through the blog roll. As I scroll through the list, it is interesting how often I see posts scroll down the list with no comments. At one time this morning, there were 7 posts, all by the same individual that rolled down the list - all with no comments. I wondered why?

Personally, when I scroll through a blog roll, and see several posts all by the same individual several things go through my mind.

  1. It has been a very slow morning here in the rain.
  2. Google juice or what I call Posting for Points.
  3. Poor headline - The keywords do not catch the intended audience's attention.
  4. The content is not directed to the intended audience.
  5. Poor content.
  6. Is the content from the heart?
  7. Does the content of the post stir an emotion in the intended audience.

I am not here to judge anyone's posts or motives, but I do often wonder about the quality of the content of the posts. Quite frankly, words do not come that easy for me as my brain works in the analytical not the abstract - which is what a good writer needs. Nonetheless, I do the best I can with the talents that God has given me.

My goal is to write articles that will not only interest my current audience, but my future audience as well. I fully understand that these posts will live on somewhere in internet long after I am gone from this planet. I want my readers to have quality information about me, my profession, and my business. Also, as I continue to build my business, I want to be able to direct my customers toward information and content that will aid them in making a decision to business with me instead of someone else. I personally feel that the intellectual content of articles I write can and will sway them in my direction.

Personally, I would rather write one good post that will get several comments than ten posts with no comments. AR is good about giving its writers 200 points for each post up to 10 posts per week as an incentive to write and drive business to their site. I see several people author ten a day, seven days a week. Why? I see no point in this.

This year, I want to challenge all of my fellow members on AR to think about the quality of the content they are writing and make this a community to be proud of.

Hi Michael, it's difficult for me to write so I have to have something going on in my life or business to write about.  Some people just post to get their points and google juice and that's it.  Too bad for them, they are missing out on a great thing.

If you write, they will come, you don't they won't.  Good points Michael, keep going as I enjoyed your input.

It's interesting because my "audience" is often the consumer - who rarely if ever replies.  I often write about individual towns, villages and hamlets and specific pet-friendly complexes in my area. They are localism in the purest sense and not likely to generate commentary. When consumers tell me they read my blog, I often find that the blogs that had the fewest (or 0) comments were often the most useful.  Consumer are just not likely to leave comments.  As to blogging for pure points - I don't. If you see anything like that from me it comes in the "members only" format so that the consumer doesn't has to slog through garbage. Nothing will turn a consumer off a blog faster than having to go through a pile of junk to get to something worthwhile.  Good tagging would help there, but not enough to prevent people from going elsewhere. Google juice is wonderful, but unless the content is there - people won't bother to read it.

I have posted and had very few comments and even had commenters say they cannot believe my post got so few comments. Also I have had other posts that got a lot of comments. I haven't figured it out yet but I think it is more than just a quality issue. Happy New Year and thanks for the thought provoking post

The other issue is that a lot of people think they can write, but can't - or don't recognize when they posting boring things. Some of this is the result of needing the points and then looking under rocks for content to post - good or bad.  Good blogging is hard WORK.  This is my primary form of prospecting for the moment. So the content had better stand up.  Although I post often, I currently will spend up to five days getting the content of each post ready. It's hard when there are no comments. But when the phone rings and someone says they like my post on such- and -such - it makes it worthwhile

Very toughful and well written. I also have trouble writing enough informational detail to make it worthwhile to read, but not so long that you can't wait to get through it. I think your blogs are great, and seem to be getting better every day. Keep up the good work.

I have found that the "stupid' stuff I write gets more comments than the serious (business related) stuff. Kinda odd.

Michael, thank you for pointing out something I've noticed lately. When I see someone submit 5+ posts on the same day, sometimes within an hour, I ignore them. No one can write that much quality content.

Like most people, I prefer quality over quantity and as you so eloquently stated, there is a reason they don't get comments. Have a great 2008!

I agree with Sean, the silly posts to members only usually get the most comments.  The ones aimed at consumers don't get many, regardless of their quality.  This is just the way it is here. I will keeep writing for consumers and posting them, comments or not.

Michael: Typically the more interesting your posts are whether localism or personally or whatever, you will pick up subscribers. It seems that the more you get known the more comments you receive. Everyone blogs and/or comments for different reasons at different times as do I. There's also a lot of sharing that goes on here on AR - all of which is wonderful.

Happy New Year!

Posts don't always have to be passionate or compelling, if the information is useful to its readers, sometimes that is all that matters. Sure controversy is one of life's spices, but sometimes you just want a little help learning how to do something, like updating your web page or ranking higher in search engines.
