miltonia in carpinteria Westerlay Orchids

This lovely orchid caught my eye when I was wandering through the Westerlay Orchid Greenhouse in Carpinteria yesterday.  It is named Miltonia in honor of Lord Fitzwilliam Milton, a British orchid lover. It originated in the Braziliian Atlantic Forest and is now one of the popular and favorite orchids in the world because they are easy to grow,

Happy Wednesday, Cheers Ron & Alexandra

That really is a gorgeous flower!  I will be honest I didn't know who it was named after.  Have a great Wednesday!

This is gorgeous isn't it? You'd think it would be difficult to grow from its exotic looks. I didn't know the name history - always fun to find out the rest of the story. I'm not especially successful with orchids, but certainly appreciate those who are...:)

That is delicious looking, Alexandra. And, thanks for the history behind it. I'm always wondering about how plants and flowers get named (well, i'm always wondering about everything :).

At first they almost look like Pansies.  The name reminds me of "melatonin," which some folks use to regulate sleep patterns:-)  But your Miltonia looks wide awake and bushy tailed:-)

Rebecca,

I am sure somewhere in your vicinity someone grows these.  I was so enchanted, I bought one for my table.  The color is a bit different.

Tony,

Neither did I until I did some research on what growers affectionately call "Milt".

Debb,

I understand.  I like the orchids that require little work on my part, and I salute all those who work at propagating these lovely plants for our enjoyement and their lasting beauty.

John,

Thank you, I seem to always add words on Wordless Wednesday..oh well, I like adding words to a post.

Myrl,

You are right, I did not see the pansy look in them, as I was focused on the orchid side of things. Thanks for pointing that out

Thank you all for your comments, we appreciate them. A

Beatiful orchid... I wish I was better at keeping them alive.  I do really well at most plants-- but not so well with orchids.  My green thumb turns brown!  K

Kathy,

I think most of us think that orchids are difficult, when in fact they are not for the most part.  There are some that need more care than others.  A

My that is a gorgeous orchid! They are certainly one of my favorite flowers and so many varieties too. The Miltonia has very different leaves - will have to look for this one.
