WordPress.org One Click Install

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Cheryl Johnson, Bob Taylor Properties, Inc., Los Angeles, CA

Disclaimer:  Although I know all kinds of TypePad stuff, I am a total beginner in WordPress.  But as I learn things, I am sharing them here.  (Make that writing them down here in AR so I don't forget them.)

In fact, my poor brain has processed so much in the last 48 hours that it may overheat.

As things would have it, I ended with some unused web space on MidPhase, a web hosting company.  I thought, cool, maybe I'll try to install a WordPress.org blog there.

Googling around, I learned that MidPhase offers One-Click WordPress installation with Fantastico.  OK, I didn't know what that was, but I figured there's nothing to lose, I'll try it.

It was quick and painless.  Here's what it looks like.  Remember One Click installation will look the same on any web host that offers Fantastico.

First, log in to your host's control panel, and find the Fantastico icon.

Click on WordPress in the Fantastico left navigation menu.

Click on New Installation.   (It's referring to installing WordPress on your web host account, now on your personal computer.)

Fantastico will populate some of the fields in the installation form, go ahead and complete the rest.  Note that the admin info must be the same login and password that you use to sign in to your host.  Also note that you probably want to install to the root directory, to maintain a simple URL such as http://www.example.com/.  When finished, click  Install WordPress.

Done and confirmed.  It's a really good idea to have Fantastico email you your new log-in information for safe keeping.

Now you can log in to your new WordPress.org blog, customize it, and start blogging.

Welcome to WordPress!  I have now updated the installation, customized a theme, and customized a plug-in.  Whew!  Like I said, a lot for an old brain to process in a 48 hour period.  I'll post some screen shots of these other actions over the next several days.

Missy -- This is .ORG, not .com.

.COM is hosted by WordPress, .ORG runs on your own server.   That's what this one-click installation business is about, installing .ORG on your own server without having to create a WordPress.org database on your own.

Renee, If you "belong" I'd think you probably signed up for the .COM version, which means you don't need to do an install at all.  On the other hand, you don't have all the customization functionality that you get with .ORG.

Experts, am I right, here?  :-)

Hey Cheryl, my comment earlier must not have posted.

Great tutorial...

I love Fantastico,  I have installed every program on the list and tested played with each one.  It is very simple to use.  There is a delay on the updates.  I am still waiting for Wordpress update.  It is on 2.3.2 now.

I manually installed the update, after running Fantastico for the new install, since then, I no longer had to think about setting up a database.  For some reason, I have a mental block about the database thing.  :-)

Yeah, I think I'll try installing some of the others, too.  Of course, I'll have to google the program names and figger out what they are first.

If nuthin else, I should install all the PHP stuff, since I ought to get a little more familiar with PHP.

Cheryl, Thank you for the clarification.  I know I had signed up for an account there and (of course) did not use it yet.  I didn't have to install so it must have been the .com version.  Happy New YEAR!!

I'm so excited taht you are giving us wordpress.org info.  I have a QuikBlog from Godaddy that I'm not real happy with, but I'm scared to death of wordpress.  If you continue here to do for WP what you've done for TypePad, I may just get up the courage to change!
