Michael Penniman 19,of West Des Moines, Iowa suffered a serious spinal injury in late January of this year. 
He is now confined to a wheel chair. He has slight mobility of his right thumb and can twitch his bicep but is otherwise paralyzed from the neck down. He has been rehabilitating at Craig Hospital in Colorado but is due to be released on May 16th. The family has incurred a lot of expenses with his injury and is now in the beginning stages of a 4 month remodel of their home to accomodate Michael's special needs. The list of what they need is endless and if you have ever known anyone in this kind of situation you know that this stuff is NOT CHEAP.
There is currently a contest going on called The Local Hero's Contest being put on by the National Mobility Dealers Association whereby one person can win a wheel chair van if they receive the most votes. All voting is done online and you can vote once a day until MAY 13th 2012. If you locate your local NMEDA affiliated dealer, you can call and get a code to get an extra five points. Voting is free, it's easy and it is a simple process. Winning this van would be a huge help to them. Vans like this cost around $30,000 ~ $50,000.
