Fotos on the Fly: The Tappan Zee Bridge on a Cloudy Night…

Early this evening I went in search of photos for a perigee moon.  Of course it was the optimist in me that actually made me believe that with all this cloud cover there might be a picture to take.   But alas, the moon could not been seen through the clouds.  In the end, I wound up on the Hudson River Walk in Tarrytown.   I thought it was a logical place to practice night photography since I know it really  well.  Besides, lately I’ve been obsessed with shooting as many  pictures of the Tappan Zee Bridge as I can –  since it is slated for replacement.  When I got to the river, I saw that the water was like glass and it was reflecting the lights coming from the bridge.

For me the Tappan Zee has always been there, its like a fixture, a permanent part of my memories since childhood.  When  I was little, we used to cross the Tappan Zee Bridge on the way to Lake Mohonk where we spent our family vacation.  Even as a small child, I loved going there and associated the bridge with that trip so much that even at the age of 3 or 4, I got very excited when I saw it from the car.  I know its past its prime and needs to be replaced, but it is sad to see it go….

Oh how beautiful!  When we were kids traveling upstate NY with our parents we crossed that bridge a lot and called it the chimpanzee bridge LOL

Ruthmarie:  What a great picture... so pretty.  I am so sorry that this favorite Tappan Zee bridge is going to be replaced.  Too bad it could not be saved, or at least perhaps turned into some sort of pedestrian bridge, or something else useful enough to keep it in place.

So sorry you could not get a view of the Supermoon.  It is gorgeous tonight... it is in its "full" phase.

Hi Sara - It would be a great bridge for Chimps. But that bridge has always been a part of my psyche.  I know its time for it to be replaced, if it isn't, I fear something terrible could happen.  It really isn't anything near to code right now and its three miles long.  Scary.

Hi Karen Anne - Its in very rough shape. They keep trying to shore it up, but if it isn't replaced soon the results could be tragic. Its three miles long and bumper to bumper during the morning and evening rush hour.  It was dismal here in NY - very cloudy.  It was as if there was no moon at all!

Awesome shot Ruthmarie. Will the new design be similar to the existing structure?

Ruthmarie:  Wow... if it's in that bad of shape, then sure... it needs to be replaced.  I cannot believe that it is three miles long.  That is incredible.  I think the longest bridge I have ever been on is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge... and that was long, and scary.  And other than that... nothing anywhere near as long.

Ruthmarie, here is a picture of last nights perigee moon.  It's incredible.  Also, I wonder what the earth looks like to someone standing on the moon looking this way... last night.

Hi Karen Anne - We crossed our comments.  I was writing while you were putting in your second comment.  Anyway,  I'd love to see pics of the perigee moon.  So if you get the chance, send me the link.  Yes, the bridge is really in trouble.   The battles over how it will be replaced have been raging for years.  Some want the bridge to become a walking/bicycle path...but Phil points out - correctly- that it is very windy and probably quite dangerouse for pedestrians.   The river produces a great breeze...One of the reasons I love the River Towns  so much is that there is always a refreshing breeze...However, right ON the bridge refreshing turns to frigid and dangerous pretty quickly.  Also - its a three mile bridge. Going across and back is six miles.....Its 1.5 miles to the center - with a lot of wind.

The new bridge has also been a real battle...Where it will be placed.  It is poised to have an impact on homes along the river front - though no one is losing their home.  So there are issues. Also- we really need some mass transit connecting Rockland and Westchester.  One reason the bridge is so challenged is that the people of Rockland and Orange counties and even beyond use the bridge to gain access to NYC. Either driving to Manhattan or taking the train from Westchester once they cross. Its an enormous bottleneck that extends commuting times by almost an hour each way - every day for people on the other side. For people on the Westchester side - the bridge means a ton of traffic.  But budget constraints have casued the powers that be to kill the mass transit portion.

Hi Debbie,

I've got a couple more....I may post one more that is a bit more cropped. I felt like such an idiot with all my equipment chasing the bloody moon - literally.  Since it was supposed to rise in the east and a rising moon is especially vivid - I had planned to start in Mamaroneck - which I did. NOTHING. Got some interesting stormy pics of Harbor Island Park and the boats...but that wasn't what I had in mind.  Then I was planning to go West to the Hudson during the height of it.  It was a plan because I thought the moon and water would work well together and Westchester certainly has water to work with.  I'm glad I didn't cancel the trip west - I wasn't wild about the sky that I had to work with, but the water is rarely so calm so that you have such a nice reflection of the lights from the bridge.  Sometimes you see it when the water is near freezing on the river, but not so much in warmer weather.

Hi Carolyn,

Did you take that? That's incredible.. If you did, can I have the jpg? If Karen Anne returns with her link - I could make a post about people who DID see the perigee moon and captured it!

Oh Ruthmarie...you're a genius with a cam.  I've always loved photography and did some shows and such in another life.  But your Tappan Zee shot and appreciation of it truly shown above, sans a Super Moon.  Loved it and you, for sharing.  Hope to see you at our next Rainmaker mixer!

Ruthmarie what a beautiful picture that is!  I crossed the bridge the other night on my way to WCMC and it was the first time across in awhile.

Ok Debra... I give up.  Just what IS WCMC ?  I can think of several possibilities... not all of which are good for "family viewing..." LOL.

Methunk the WC may have stood for Women's Council, or Wild and Crazy... and then I was stumped by the rest of it.  So it all comes clear to me now.  Thanks, Ruthmarie.  I wonder about these things... LOL.
