Outside The Box- Part 2
Part 2: A 1980’s Eureka Moment
Alberta... the early 1980’s. The real estate market was at best, abysmal. Nothing was selling, homes were going into foreclosure by the thousands, many people were underwater on their mortgages and handing their homes back to the bank. Realtors® weren’t making a dime and they were leaving the industry in droves.
Sound familiar?
One evening, over cocktails, two Realtors where recapping the day’s work and how much money they had not made...again. Somehow, they started brainstorming and almost simultaneously, both of them came up with a similar idea. What if we did...?
What they were proposing had never been done before, but what the hell, nothing else was working. They started with a few ads in local papers; remember, this was pre-Internet, pre-computers, pre-anything!
Within a short time, they were carrying 50, 60, then 70 listings and selling everything they listed. At one point, they were turning listings into the Real Estate board with a pending offer attached.
The two found out later that they were actually the topic of Monday morning sales meetings of at least two major competitor real estate companies.
The question they were asking was:
“What the heck are these two guys doing?”
