Formerly called "Chili on the Comstock", the 29th annual Virginia City Chili Cook-Off, aka "Fire on the Mountain", has changed more than its name. This year, the chili cook-off has expanded from just one day to an entire weekend and now includes the Celtic celebration of May known as the Beltane Festival. Located just a short half hour drive south of Reno, this officially sanctioned International Chili Society (ICS) event brings together talented chefs from all over Reno and beyond to compete for best red chili, best green chili and best salsa!
The cooking begins at 10am on both Saturday, May 12, 2012 and Sunday, May 13, 2012. After the official entries have been handed in at the judge's tent, you can taste test each chef's culinary creation for yourself. Tasting kits are available for just $5 each. They include a small 1 oz cup, spoon, napkins and 10 tasting tickets. Each "taste" will cost you 1 ticket. Salsa tastings will take place after 12pm, green chili tastings begin after 1pm and tastings of the red chili contenders take place at 3pm. Cash prizes will be offered to all contestants in both the chili and salsa categories.
In addition to some amazing chili and salsa recipes, there will be live entertainment, craft booths and lots of fun things for the kids to do. The Beltane Fire Festival is new to this annual Reno area tradition. Stop by one of the Celtic booths, watch one of the amazing fire demonstrations and enjoy traditional Celtic entertainment. It's going to be fun for the entire family. Come to the Virginia City Chili Cook Off near Reno this weekend, May 12th & 13th for some great food and amazing entertainment.
