You Can’t Get There From Here!
This is a common joke when someone asks for directions. As a patrol officer, I would use this joke to effectively relieve the tension in a lost motorist who was completely frustrated and asking me for directions. It always worked well. How do I get to Disneyland!? “You can’t get there from here.” It was almost like resetting their emotions with a smile so they could focus and find The Happiest Place on Earth.
Recently, I was in Menifee, CA. I had just shown a home that my clients completely fell in love with. I needed to get back to the office to write up the Purchase Agreement. I punched the address to the office into my navigation to determine the fastest way home. I was already headed northwest as I waited for the route guidance to kick in. When it did, I heard, “Make a U-turn when possible.” I was stunned. Anaheim Hills is northwest of Menifee and I was headed in that direction. Why on earth would I make a U-turn??? I backed the map out to a broader view and realized I could not get there from here! The road I was on would eventually curve and continue to the northeast to San Bernardino. I really did have to go southeast for several miles before traveling due west and getting on the I-15 Freeway.
The following Sunday, I was at home when a client texted me that he was on his way into an Open House. I asked him to call me when he was done. A few hours later, he did. The Open House agent told him that even though he had a Personal Real Estate Consultant, he had other listings to show him that he might be interested in. My client thought there was no harm in looking, so he went with him. The agent proceeded to show him six different homes, all $100,000 more than my client is pre-approved for. The agent was upset when my client said he would be calling me. He called me alright. He wanted to know if it was true what the agent was telling him, he could offer $100,000 less and still get the homes. I checked the homes and assured him it was not true. Experience shows the agent was trying to get him to fall in love with the more expensive homes so he would seek out his lender to spend more on his home purchase; a classic sales tactic that I loathe. My client went on to explain that he had fallen in love with one of these homes and wondered if could get it. You can’t get there from here my friend.
I fell back on that old pattern-interrupt joke and got his attention. I reminded him of what he told me his goals were and pointed out that none of these homes fit into those goals. He thanked me sincerely and we’re now in escrow on a lovely home that he can comfortably afford!
Are you trying to make a decision or reach a goal and…you can’t get there from here? Call me. I’ve had special training in helping you to reach a decision. My clients absolutely love the exercise and, on more than one occasion, we have used it effectively outside of real estate matters. There really is a difference when you have a friend you can rely on to help you accomplish your goals!
