Mother’s Day at the Furniture Sharehouse…

Here’s an idea for a unique mother’s day gift.   Hundreds of families are in real financial trouble.  Since they can barely put food on the table, the result is that they are often eating on the floor.  They can’t even afford the basics in terms of beds, tables, chairs etc.  That’s where the Furniture Sharehouse comes in.  They work with local social agencies and help furnish homes for families in need.   To do so, the have a large network of volunteers that collect gently used furnishing from area residents and store it in one place so a needy family can be matched with appropriate items.

Furniture donations are always welcome, but the Furniture Sharehoue also is in need of funds to coordinate and maintain the nuts and bolts of their work.  So for Mother’s Day you can honor Mom by donating to the Furniture Sharehouse and you can download a card to send to your mother showing what you did!

What a great idea. I have never heard of such a program before. And what a great way to honor a mom on mother's day.

Hi Gretchen, I thought it was a  very unique idea....

Hi Chris, It was a great way to raise funds...and a unique gift for Mom...

Hi Pam,  The coordination is considerable.  From what little I know  one of the bigger problems is finding a space to store things.  If you are trying to furnish families you can't do it piece by piece, it has to be coordinated.  The other issues are volunteers driving trucks and also ONLY accepting gently used furnishings and not becoming  a trash hauler.   Then there is the coordination with agencies to find the right families for the service and then getting the furnishings to these families.  So there are a lot of moving parts.

Ruthmarie, what a wonderful idea. Especially, for those who may have already lost their mom. What a wonderful thing to do in memory of mom.

Dear Ruthmarie,

Great idea. Of course, there are low cost Salvation Army & Goodwill to shop at and stores like ReStore & Community Forklift for building materials, but I have not heard of a furniture bank. I see a lot of furniture in the trash around here, so if it could go there instead, that would help families & keep the landfill going for a while longer.

You know we have very few pieces of "New" furniture in our house.  Some of it was found with signs on it that said "Free" we have always managed and our kids cannot ruin it.

Hi Kay,

It really is a great idea.  The coordination is difficut. But if somone is willing to deal with the logistics, it can benefit so many people.

Hi Tammy - It is a great way to honor our Mom's who have passed.

Hi Dorte - Around here there are a lot of things the salvation army won't take.  Also, the idea is to furnish the entire home/apartment for the family.  They first have to go through a screening process.  So it truly targets only those in financial distress.

Hi Gene - Some people have money to remodel and they don't know what to do with their old furnishings.   Some of which are nicer than what I have in my own home!

Hi Bob - I hope so.  They are doing very well with getting furniture, but they always need funds for overhead.
