What is good service?

The other day I received a knock at the front door of our house.  This is very odd because I have a fenced in front yard with a gate.  As I went to the front door I could see some one was standing there through the opaque glass in the door.  I open the door and it was the FedEx delivery person.  He had a package for me.  I asked if I needed to sign for it and he said no and ran out to the gate which was closed. Our gate is 11 feet in the middle and about 8 feet at the corners.

I shouted " Wait I'll open the gate for you!"

He shouted back" Don't bother, I got this!"

He then jumped and climbed over our fence.

I commend him on his athletic prowess however I don't believe I want the liability for this type of activity.  My dog doesn't like surprises either however she was inside.

When I looked at the package it wasn't even addressed to me, it was the neighbors.

I like and enjoy good service but climbing walls and running through yards bothers me.  What if he had fallen and broke his leg, his ankle, or his neck?

When I delivered the package to the rightful owners, I opened the gate and walked it over.  After all, I'm not a superhero, just a Realtor...

Would you complain, thank, or what?

That is a great story.  I can not believe the deliveryman climbing the fence.

Most of the time we complain they won't go the extra mile, that's why I had to ask what you would do...

Well, if you're gate wasn't locked and there was no deterent for him to open it himself then it's fine.. but jumping it just sounds silly., and dangerous. But then, if you lock the gate, how could any delivery person come to the door?

For some reason, I believe that the FedEx fellow broke a few rules.

I'd be a little miffed... What about a closed gate do you not understand. I live in a condo and anyone can walk up to my door. Yet, I have a sign, No Solicitors... But some think that was meant for everybody except them!

Hmmm.  I have to admire him for going the extra mile to deliver what he thought was your package.  However, I am certain that the "delivery company" has standard procedures.  You probably have the same delivery person dedicated to your home so if he does it again, I might tell him that you would appreciate it if he would ring at the gate next time.

Tammy, We install the fence and gate after being broken into. We have an intercom outside the gate that can be used but the delivery person took it upon himself to go over the fence...

Lenn, As I told Tammy, all's the delivery person had to do wish to push the call button and I would have let him in. If he would have delivered to the right house they have no gate...

René,  Before we insalled the fence and gate we had several items stolen from our property. We had no trespassing signs and no solicitors signs that people just ignored.

Kathryn, We have had the same UPS driver for over 5 years but FedEx has different people all the time...

So much for the privacy of the gate.  He must have been quite the athlete.

I think I'd have to complain. Although I do commend him for his athleticism, the gate WAS closed... which means 'stay out'. He should have buzzed at the gate or left a note that said 'come and pick it up'.

Paul- good question.  If he were a regular, I'd probably speak to him about it.  And as Kathryn said, I'm sure the company has a policy against this.
