The Real Estate market might not be great but do you have a business plan for 2008? Part 2

Business Plan 2008I'm not going to go to much into details with this post.

But since Jonathan Washburn asked for people to contribute their ideas on a business plan for 2008.

I thought I would touch on a few things.

As some of you know...I'm not much for planning too far ahead. I find when I start thinking too much about goals that might be out of reach that I tend to just drift away from them anyway. I like to keep my goals simple and then if I reach them or go beyond them...I will just add to them as I go along. It is similar to the way I blog. I don't sit down and write out my posts too far in advance. I usually write on the fly and if I wake up and think of something good to write about then I go for it.

Usually when I do it this way they come out pretty good instead of trying too hard to make everything so perfect. That just adds more pressure on me. It is the same with my business plan and when I just go with the flow it seems to make it a lot easier on me. not everyone is the same. There are some who have to write out these long calculated numbers and figures and stories just to motivate themselves. That might be fine for them but for me I will just do it the same way I'm used to. I seem to be more organized when I'm unorganized. My wife drives me crazy with my day planners and my data bases and my stickers all over the office but hey....that's just me so just do it the way you are comfortable with it and the rest will fall into place.

I wrote a post back in November called The Real Estate market might not be great but do you have a business plan for 2008? and maybe I should have waited to post it for this but like I just said...it was done on the fly. I hope you all take the time to read the extended version on my other blog of my business plan for 2008.

I, like you, have decided to "go with the flow" in 2008.  I have a rigid daily schedule that I follow and have been having no problems!  I do have a loose business plan and have created business plans the last several years.  The only problem is I had to restructure it mid 2008 with the non-conforming mortgage market mess.

Cheers to success for you Neal in 2008!

Neal,

I forget to set goals myself, but I've learned we have to have a plan of action.  Run our business like a business.

I keep a short list of goals in a Word doc on my desktop.  I open it regularly to see what I have accomplished, what needs to be updated and what just isn'tgoing to happen.  Most people treat marketing plans or business plans as a once-a-year activity.  If it isn't a living document, then you are probably wasting your time!

Here's to a GREAT '08!

Be of service!  The rewards will come!

Renee,

I believe in making a plan but a simple one. We still have another 360 days left to make changes and I certainly can't predict the future.

Bryan,

Setting goals are fine to a point at least for me...we never know what changes are going to have to be made through out the year and so I don't want too much disappointment if my plans have to change.

Matt,

short is nice..there is nothing wrong with a plan that you get from seminar motivational speakers but see how many can actually follow through the entire year with them.

Neal, I am much the same way as you.  I have a general goal for 2008 so that I have a direction to head in and something to reach for.  But I do not break it down step by step.  Planning this way has always worked for me in the past and I will stay with it until it stops working.  Some people need the detail, but for me I would spend all my time reviewing the details and not have enough time to the work to make it a reality.

George,

I bet if we did a survey...most people feel the same way. I just think a long term one is hard to keep up with and spend more time worrying about the plan then implimenting it...why not take it quarterly instead of one lump of the year.

Hi Neal,
I thought I must be the only member who does not write out a formal business plan.  I make a daily list of things to do and on Sunday nights I plan my week.  I have goals but I find I adjust as I go.  May not be the way for some but works for me.

Hi Cynthia...

Just so those who think otherwise...mine is not a negative thought...it's just realistic...I have sat through many seminars and have seen many falter 1 month later and some that fully follow it and do well...I'm just sceptical on how much is really created from the motivation and how much is just from doing it their way. I fully support any plan they might have...but as I always say...everyone is different and we all work at different speeds so with that you have to take it for what it's worth. Weekly is definitely a better and easier way to go...it also gives us things to do if we aren't busy. I have many things I want to do swirling around in my head but time and really thinking it out is the key...I don't need to the pressure of a long term time-line. And i'm not feeling too guilty...we live a prettry good lifestyle so I'm not complaining too much...we just have to go with the flow and hope is a big factor in my life.

I agreed with you then...and now. There are some plans I've seen that are pretty structured...but you know me Neal. My business plan is short, sweet and hey...I do it month by month.

Neal - I'm a 'Go with the flow' type of person myself.  While I have nothing against some planning and 'methods behind the madness' I'm not one to formulate a detailed & calculated plan.

Sally,

Structure are fine but for me it has not been able to be as effective. You tend to pressure yourself to do things at times you do not want to or no time to. My friend took this motivational thing for $900 and was to make 300 cold calls a week...which is great but she spent so much time complaining that she had to take care of her kids and didn't have time to do the follow up that is involved so go figure.

Jason,

Free for all like me. I agree with you not to say planning is a bad thing...just on a shorter and more sensible timeline. Some people can program themselves to it but some can't. I hope the opinions here are true and not just to be nice but I am sure most admit they can't stick to everything by the book. Things happen and things come up...I just say if you can make it a little more simple..then you can add to it later...there is nothing wrong with adding things....you might even come up with a better idea later instead of trying so hard. Any idiot can say they are going to make 100K this year but thinking and doing are tow different things...maybe thinking you can make 50k in half the year and then plan the second part...you know thats my opinion. Some people just need the big motivation for appearances...people just starting out are probably more tailored to that but experienced people tend to go against the grain.

Here is an example of my day today. I am watching my daughter but I have been calling my old clients and so far 4 of them are responding as to possibly wanting to do something again real soon. Calling you old clients are the best clients some times. That was part of my plan for today along with blogging and finalizing deal. Not a lot but at least productive.

I treat business like a game of chess.  You need to have a basic strategy (plan) and then a list of tactics (enhancements) to achieve you strategy or plan.

Randy,

I know you are a chess champion so I won't fight you on that venue. Definitely need tactics and strategies and I never draw my ace card unless it's the last resort.

Neal I too like to keep it simple. My plan for 2008 is the same it has been for the last 14 years: "I plan to get up everyday and go to work" That's it. Very simple but guaranteed to work.

BB,

I'm like you keep it simple but I don't agree with one thing you do...you said you get up everyday and go to work. I get up and hope my two feet hit the ground at the same time...then I go to work:)

Seriously it is too hard for me at least to forecast so far ahead but if you lay down some simple things you will be successful quicker instead of jumping too far ahead.

It is very simple...if you make too  complicated you'll just waste valuable energy.
