The Black Canyon of The Gunnison National Park...An Awesome Gorge. That's what the park brochure says, and it's true. Hidden outside of Montrose, Colorado in a remote location is this amazing hole in the ground. It's called 'Black' because the canyon walls are so steep and sheer and the canyon is so narrow that it gets very little sunlight.
There is no experience like walking to the edge of an overlook and looking down into this 'black' hole. On a calm day you can hear the river below roaring along it's winding course. That's the Gunnison River you can see.
This picture was taken from the South Rim. It's the most visited rim of the park. It would take you half a day to drive around the canyon to the North Rim. There is no bridge between the two rims. Yet the canyon is so narrow you could almost ( almost, but not quite ) throw a Frisbee from one rim to the other. But please don't throw anything. It's strictly against park rules and falling objects can do serious damage to hikers below you.
There are several miles of hiking trails on both rims...most of them offering overlooks into the canyon. Camping is available...mostly on a first come, first served basis. There is a visitor center at both rims. This park is surrounded by national recreation areas where the fishing is great, the hiking is amazing and the sight seeing is fabulous.
