I just read Jason's post about the Inspired By Song contest. There is no hesitation in my mind as to a childhood music memory. I just had to make sure that I could find a YouTube with this song on it! Am I giving away my age?
I was just 6 years old living in Berlin Germany where my father was stationed as a Naval Lt Commander in the Naval Intelligence division. We lived right on the border of east and west Berlin. We spoke German and lived as German citizens and even went to an all German school. This was in the early 60's to mid 60's.
My dad had just bought a television, back in the day when you had those big 'ears' on the televisions to get a signal, does anyone remember that? Oh, that makes me sound ancient! In Europe you had all your TV shows blocked together without any commercials and then they had all the commercials at one time every few hours. My dad mostly watched the news especially about what was going on in the states. I was the oldest of 4 kids and we were not that interested in watching TV. It was like a grown up thing. I remember sombering events such as the Cuban missile crisis and the assassination of John F Kennedy.
When my mom and dad got divorced my mother went back to the states with 2 of the kids and I and my brother stayed with my dad for 2 years in Germany. One night my dad found out that Nancy Sinatra was going to be on television. This was one big event in our home that evening. We all sat around this television and watched in awe of Nancy singing her hit song, " These Boots Are Made For Walking." Does anyone remember this performance?
Oh, at 6 years old, I was in total awe of seeing sexy dancing and all those girls up there on that stage inside the Television. We had no clue that they were not really inside the television! I remember that moment so well. This was the first performance of a pop culture type music that I had ever seen. My mother had immersed me in folk songs, Opera and theatrical musicals of the day. This was something new and exciting to a young 6 year old girl living in Germany singing, "Deutchland, Deutchland Uber Ales", over and over again every day at school.
