Foodie Fridays in Austin

Dories picksIt’s Friday again and time to make plans to eat out. Austin has so many interesting places to dine.  There is something for everyone... new ones pop up and then there are the old time favorites.

I’ve got some good choices this week if you’re in the mood for authentic Mexican cuisine in downtown Austin:

1. Guero’s Taco Bar   http://www.guerostacobar.com/

Back in the late 1800’s Guero’s dining room was a local seed and feed store that was a local meeting place for many of South Austin’s characters. You knew there were dice games going on in the back room and often you could catch a glimpse of the bookmakers paying off bets on the front porch! In 1993 the store closed for good and in 1995 Guero’s was born, continuing the tradition of a meeting place for the locals and newcomers alike. Their handmade corn tortillas are to die for and their salsa bar is renowned!

2. Matt’s El Rancho  http://mattselrancho.com/

In 1952 Matt’s El Rancho opened its doors. At that time they only offered blue-plate specials such as chicken fried steak with an occasional enchilada special. The patrons soon clamored for more Mexican and now they gained the legendary status as “The King of Mexican Food.” Geno and I frequented Matt’s when we were dating because he grew up in Travis Heights and used to go there with his parents.

3. La Condesa    http://www.lacondesaaustin.com/

Here you will find contemporary Mexican cuisine with traditional regional influences. They also feature over 100 varieties of 100% blue agave tequila as well as a wide assortment of specialty cocktails. Located in the heart of downtown Austin you’ll love the energetic atmosphere associated with vibrant Second Street!

Hello Dorie,

Good little Friday series you have here.

Your listing some really good places to eat.

I have been lucky enough to have eaten at some of these places in the past when I would visit Austin on business.

Have a good weekend.

Best, Clint McKie

Hood AM Dorie -

La Condessa is one of my FAVORITES!  Incredible food, and be sure to save room for dessert, because the pastry chef is a nationally recognized award winner.  So YUM!
