Graceful Master Suite Addition

Sometimes a thoughtful addition can make a big difference in the way a home looks and feels!  This was a small home on a very special piece of land in Birmingham, Alabama – close to the city but far away from the city life!  Located in the bend of a small river, the wooded lot provided plenty of privacy for this young family.  They had already updated most of the house, so the only problems remaining were the tiny, outdated Master Bedroom and Bath (which was smaller than a Hall Bath). Before Renovation  Well that, and the outside of the home was getting pretty tired… as seen at left.

The owners also felt that more could be done to take advantage of the beautiful setting.  They came to me with 4 requests: a bigger Master Bedroom, a nice Master Bath, make sure the Addition looks like it has always been a part of the home, and bring the outdoors in.Home Renovation

We extended the end of the house 24’, re-created the old roof lines, and finished the outside with the same materials.  This allowed us to remove the end wall and add 8’ to the existing Master Bedroom.  The southeast corner became a 16’x16’ Covered Porch, which opened to a rock-walled Terrace that extends to the end of the plateau - where the site drops off on 3 sides to the river below.  On the west side, we combined the added space with the old Master Bath and closets to make a nice, modern Bathroom with 2 large walk-in closets.  Two windows over the lowered tub, two picture windows and a double glass door in the Bedroom bring in lots of filtered light and make it feel like you’re outdoors!

Master Bedroom RenovationFowler Custom Homes did a great job making the inside beautiful and the outside addition looks like part of the original home.  Or maybe it’s more correct to say they made the original home look like new – they replaced the roof and worn out siding, too!

Many people have a homesite that they hate to leave even though the house itself no longer suits them. With some imagination and a bit of experience, that house can be transformed into the home of ones dreams. Contact me and we can discuss the possibilities.

Thanks!  Fowler Custom Homes did a great job on this addition.  I too have seen some pretty bad DIY additions.  On the other hand, I've also seen some pretty nice work by homeowners.  These homeowners had already renovated their Kitchen, Family Room, Hall Bath and the kids' Bedrooms, and they all looked great!  What do you think causes one DIY job to look great and another to be a disaster?  I have some thoughts - will try to post soon.  In the meantime, anyone have thoughts on this?
