There are many potential outdoor safety hazards around your home that we may not normally think about. Here is a list of some items to be aware of:
1) Playground Equipment -
Checking for rusted, rotted, loose or damaged areas or sharp edges is very important to prevent injuries. Playground Equipment should be age appropriate and be well supervised when being used. The area around the playground equipment should be hazard free and extend out at least 6 feet and be at least 9 inches thick. Check for any gapping or areas where clothing can be caught which could cause strangulation. Remove all damaged or loose hanging ropes. Make sure rails are secure and spaced properly as to avoid a fall or entrapment hazards.
2) Pools -
Provide constant supervision of children around any body of water, no matter what size. Keep life-saving devices readily available. There should be a suitable fence and gate. Install child-resistant latches and water alarms.
3) Electricity -
Make sure all electrical components are installed to properly and to code and are not damaged.
4) Grills -
Gasoline or propane but be stored outside and in approved containers only. Containers shoulde be in good condition. Gas grills should be on be level surfaces and in good working order. Check grills periodically for loose or gamaged burners, grates, handles and hinges could help prevent any problems. Allow grilling area its own space away from the house, railings, people and play areas. Check gas lines or tanks for leaks each time a new one is installed. Do not attempt to light burners or strike a match when gas odor is present. Turn off gas valve on the tank after every use. Bugs/spiders can work their way into a grill that has not been used for a while. Use caution as they can block or upset the gas flow which can create a fire/burn hazard. Do not allow children to use the grill or play near the grill until it is cooled down.
