The Real Effects of the Recent Colorado Snow... I'm Not Smiling.

I am sure that most of you have been aware that the Active Rainers ... or should I say "Snowers" that reside in the front range of the Rocky Mountains (Denver and Colorado Springs) have been hit with quite the snow storms over the past few weeks. Kristal Kraft has some great posts about the weather. I have even done a few posts myself. (See below for a few good reads...)

What does all of this snow this mean to Colorado?

Well, nothing good. According to a local news article, despite all the snow that we have been getting, "much of the states snow-pack is below average." This is not good because we need snow-pack in the right places (mountains) for our water supply. Proper snow-pack alleviates the problems associated with living in a high desert like watering restrictions and, more importantly... forest fires.

On the other end of the spectrum... there ARE parts of the state that have above average snow-pack- up to 124%! But they are in the N/E and S/E parts of Colorado and do not really effect our water supply. What's worse? These are rural communities that rely heavily on livestock. Despite rescue efforts of the Colorado National Guard, these past storms have killed over 3,000 cattle, causing a major hit to these area's economies.

I think we need to strike a nice balance with Mother Nature, here. Any recommendations?

OMG..Mariana, I had no idea that it was that bad. Never thought of the water supply or the poor cattle. I'm sorry about that Mariana!  Here in NH we have had near summer like weather...very strange indeed. Wish I had answer for you.

Don't talk to me about balance with Mother Nature - look at the devastating hurrincanes here lately.  I think we need to give to MN to be able to receive.   I hope it gets better and the snow learns where to pack itself.

Mariana - I heard about the livestock on the news a couple of days ago.  I don't think most of us think about that kind of impact unless we're right there.  I also saw on the news the stories about the avalanches that hit the highway - that was scary to hear about.

I do hope it gets better for you very soon.  Even though we're enjoying unbelieveable weather here, there are also those here who are being hit hard because we have NO snow and no cold weather.  Those who depend on snow, ice, and cold weather are really hurting this year.  I'm loving the lower oil bills for heating, but I do feel really bad for those affected by the strange weather we're all having.

Monika, this is a weird year, as we have been in a drought for the past several years. The late 80's and early 90's had a lot of snow, like this- but "we" were better prepared? We have been w/o much moisture for over a decade, so this is like "new" for us again...

Ines- You are right. I would not trade this snow for hurricanes. Ever. I am in constant awe of the devastation that MN wrecks on you guys. I guess that if I had to pick a natural disaster ... snow storms would be the one I would pick.

Ann- Yep. The avalanches were/are bad this season. There always is a trade off for unexpected weather. At least none of us have to deal with tsunamis...

In Las Vegas, we rely on Colorado snowfall for our water supply from the Colorado River. I just wish you guys had a chance to play around and have fun with it before sending it our way. Hopefully this will improve in the next couple of months for you. What kind of assistance is there for the ranchers?

Hi John- The Colorado National Guard has been down in La Junta rescuing cattle for the past couple weeks. A good friend of mine was one of them. He said that it was very sad.

Mariana - I, too, would take snowstorms any day over just about any other kind of weather Mother Nature could dish out!

Hope you guys get a well-deserved weather break soon, and that you get the snow in the areas that really need it.

Wow Mariana.. poor cows! and of course, the snow would accumulate where it's not helping. yikes! Our situation is similar with the Hurricanes.. everything stops. literally.  I'm not waiting 4 hours in line for gas when there is no where to go.  We are begging for a cool breeze down here. "What happened to winter?", we keep asking. :))

Oh! Look! A Butterfly! aka Mariana...

Look at it this way, you are not alone. Like Ines said you have snow we deal with hurricanes and tornado's.

If I could negotiate the weather with Mother Nature, I would take the snow and pass on the hurricanes and tornado's.

Hope all gets back to normal soon.

TLW...ROAR!

TLW, You are right... Everyone has to deal with Mother Nature in one way or another. Thank you for your well-wishes, and I hope it gets "normal" again, too. What IS normal...?
