Positive or Negative? Your Amygdala Brain And Your Life
I majored in psychology and went on to grad school so I found Richard and Beth Witt's post on our brain fascinating. I remember reading Dr. Norman Vincent Peale's book "The Power of Positive thinking" and realized how important it is to see the glass half full.
See if you can try just for 1 day to find the positive in everything... focus on what you're thankful for. If you find that negative thought creeping in, kick it out!
Stop by to comment if you'd like and please stop at Richard and Beth's.
One of the things that I constantly remind myself about, is to be very aware of the good things in my life.
I have noticed how seldom we speak of the positive things in our lives compared to how often we speak of the negative things in our lives.
It seems to be a part of human biological functioning to take good things for granted, especially those good things that are a part of our day-in, day-out lives.
I recently discovered that there is actually a part of our brain
that is designed to screen out anything that isn't hurtful, fearful, or physically moving. A long time ago, it helped our ancestors stay alive and get ready to fight or run away.
There is new evidence that shows that this brain function may have something to do with our neglect of the good and positive things in our lives. Are you taking your most important gifts for granted? If so, how could you change, and how soon?
If we want to change our focus to the positive things in our life we must make a conscious effort to do so.
I find it is something that we must work on every day. Start with a daily gratitude list of 100 things that you are grateful for and consider positive in your life.
When was the last time you were thankful for the fact that we have electricity? Or you can see? Or you can walk? Or your loved ones? See what I mean?
Then focus on these things and notice how good you feel. It takes time and it takes discipline but I have found it a very valuable exercise. If you believe that we attract what we think about you might see the value in changing your focus and reducing the power that your Amygdala Brain has over your life.
If you question the above, notice how many times someone in your life has been kind and wonderful to you for years and then they did one thing that you did not like. Notice how quickly you fixated on that unhappy action and forgot all the positive actions. Notice how many people you told about what they did to you and notice how few people you told about all the wonderful, good and caring things they did for you and all the ways they enhanced your life.
Is it not true that 100 good deeds can be wiped out by 1 bad deed? Is it not true that you did not feel good while all this was taking place? So, I ask you is it not worth working on that part of your brain that drives you down the path to negativity?
What are you grateful for in your life? How do you express your gratitude, and how often do you express it?
