United States Air Force Academy Graduation 2012

Air Force Academy CapelThe Class of 2012 of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, will be commissioned this week.  Culminating in the Graduation Ceremony to be held in Falcon Stadium on Wednesday, May 23, at 10:00 am with Barack Obama delivering the commencement speech, it promises to be an exciting week for the Cadets and their families.

The General Henry "Hap" Arnold Class will be the 54th Graduating Class from the Air Force Academy.  While there are many activities planned for the Cadets, there are also several scheduled events that will affect the roads and areas around the Air Force Academy on the north side of Colorado Springs.

MONDAY, May 21, 2012

Beginning at 8:30 am and lasting until late into the evening, there will be coffees and luncheons and Individual Award Ceremonies, receptions and concerts.  If you are traveling on the Interstate, expect delays in the vicinity of Mile Marker 150.  The Air Force Thunderbirds, America's Ambassadors in Blue, will practice today from 4:00 to 4:45, weather permitting.  Grab a chair and take a few minutes to enjoy the most spectacular air show our armed forces have to offer.

TUESDAY, May 22, 2012

A full schedule of Graduation Ceremonies and Receptions, this is the BIG day for the Cadets.  Commissionings take place throughout the afternoon and evening, with the Graduation Ball being held at night.  The roads through the Air Force Academy grounds will be closed from noon until 3:00 pm for the Thunderbirds Practice Show which will take place at 2:00.  If you have ever been in town for this event, you know that roads on the north side of town and on the Interstate are congested.  Thrilling but noisy, the Thunderbirds put on a spectacular show that have thousands of people stopped along the sides of the road to watch and enjoy, and thousands more in fields and parking lots taking time out to watch these precision performers.  Give yourself plenty of travel time.

WEDNESDAY, May 23, 2012

air force thunderbirdsWhile the actual Graduation Ceremony does not begin until 10:00 am, gates to Falcon Stadium will open at 7:30 am, and traffic will be at a crawl.  The Interstate is scheduled to be closed for approximately 20 minutes as Mr. Obama arrives, but the exact time is not yet known.  At the conclusion of the Graduation Ceremony, the Thunderbirds will perform their famous aerial art show, tentatively scheduled for 12:30 or 1:00, where the 54th Graduating Class of the United States Air Force Academy will perform the famous Hat Toss.

Thanks for the posting, MiMi.... a very proud moment for many parents and cadets!!  Of course, those of us in the back yard of the Academy, get the pleasure of it's presence!!  A heads up on the traffic issues is nice, as well.

Mimi... How exciting! My grandson Jakob is graduating from Joplin High School today and President Obama is giving the commencement speach. I'm sure it will be a thrilling event for those kids. Also, I love Seafair here in Seattle and look forward to the Blue Angels every year! Great post! And best of luck to all those graduating from the Air Force Academy! Many will go on to serve our country for many years to come.

Mimi, what an exciting week for the graduates especially with our current President speaking at the graduation ceremony.  I am sure this is a very proud week for not only the graduates but their family and friends.  Good luck getting around and dealing with the increase in vistors this week!  --Krystal

Make sure you have plenty of business cards on hand for all those out of state cars parked in your town.  I never let one get way without leaving a card.  Who knows when they may want to move there if they are already visiting there?
