What do you do when the coyotes show up in your back yard?

I arrived home the other day and the side gate to the backyard was wide open.  First thought: were our two dogs okay (a West Highland Terrier and a Shi tzu). We spotted them tucked away in the house, and realized our gardeners had left the gate open.  Good doggies...to stasy in, as there are coyotes in our area in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas.

The worse case scenario came to mind; I remember finding the hind legs and hips of one of our cats in the field alongside our backyard -- coyotes had eaten the rest of him.  Then I remembered the advice my husband once gave me regarding coyotes (as they often walked parallel to him and our Golden when the hiked the upper golf course paths).

When they hinted at getting near, John would make a loud yell (my Tarzan) and raise his hands and arms to present a larger and taller presence.  The result: coyotes might take a second or third look, but they went on their way.

John also mentioned to (gulp!) not be afraid...yea!

Terry - Anything wild in the backyard .... is the wrong thing in the backyard.  Kids and pets frequently do not realize the danger ... so early education about safety ... even about looking bigger  ... but more so the escape route just in case they don't like being challenged or hunger and thirst makes them overly aggressive!

Hi Jack,

Agreed, the backyard is no place for wild ones, and some preventive education is valuable.  One of the things we definitely tell people to do IS NOT RUN AWAY (unless they have an open door to their house or car a few steps away).  The wild ones like a good chase and capture!  Thanks for your comment.

Hi Mark,

I think John scared the neighbors along the cart path.  I have practiced using a shrill whistle -- seems to work well, and there are no Tarzan-Jane jokes!  Thanks for stopping by...

Hi Steve,

I'm sure the Tiger Sharks in Maui and the neighboring islands would applaud such manly antics, but with scuba or diving gear there may be a translation problem????  Aloha

Hi Rob,

Been buried in our exciting industry swings, and liking it.  Thanks for your comment, and we like the "Biggest little city..." as well.  We get some great air time with my commercial!

Ha ha, Joanna -- I see your "beauty" next to you.  She might scare off the cototes; our Golden was good at scaring off the adolescent coyotes!  Thanks for dropping by...

Terry - Great local post for the Reno-Tahoe area.  Coyotes are a danger to our small animals and children.  You've given some great advice for those that are new to our area and a reminder to be careful and be on guard in the Sierras!

Glad to hear it. Keep me posted on how the commercial goes and if it's worth the expense.

My reply's a bit late, Laura, but thanks for your comment that's truly of local interest.

Hi Rob -- commercials are really about having the right producer and getting great TV access time.  I found both in Sam Breen.  The commercials are doing well!
