Stepping Stones to Success
When it comes to success just about everyone has their own opinion, usually a very strong one, on how to go about it. If you’re a business owner, your definition of success will most likely be different than a General Manager of a store or a Real Estate Agent. I believe that no matter what level of success you’re trying to achieve, the steps toward this goal are the same.
So, let me add my part to this, though I have had 24+ years to put to the test my opinions – and by trial and error come up with the ones that DO work. Thought I’d share. Success is not a brilliant idea or being CEO at daddy’s company, success is achieving what you want for yourself through hard work. Here is a list of great tips and strategies that I’ve compiled to help you succeed at whatever you’re endeavoring.
Learn the Business and the jobs of your Co workers:
Whether you’re working in a large corporation or in a smaller office environment like myself it’s essential to know how the business functions. Every business is complex so this will take some time, but time well spent. Who is the best with clients? Who knows what you don’t and can tell you all about it? Being able assess the business, who plays what role and how is a vital tool to success. This will help you gauge where you stand within the company and where you can eventually diversify.
Make Yourself Indispensable:
This is one that truly depends on the company. For instance if you’re Sous Chef in a high quality producing kitchen and you become indispensable, you may not be moved to Head Chef which is much more desirable on a resume. However, in many cases, becoming the absolute best at what you do is essential. Each job has its own specificity to the company and it’s your job to find out what you can bring to the table that’s unique and functional. This also brings stability and safety to you (and your family).
Your boss wants you there an hour early? Show up fifteen minutes before that! “If you’re early you’re on time if you’re on time you’re late” so says many-a-college professor and they say it for a reason! Be more than thorough when you can and then offer to do more. Let them know you’re not only a team player, but you’re there to excel and help them succeed in the process. Having the ability to put new ideas out there is a great skill to develop in this process as well. Study your co-workers and your boss to see what kind of ideas and techniques they gravitate toward and build upon it. Before you know it you’ll be innovative employee that’s become the go-to person.
Be a Collaborator:
It’s great to show your boss and manager that you can be reliable and an independent worker, but it’s just as important to be a team player and able to collaborate and toss ideas around with co workers. Attitude matters and paying attention to what others think will be effective in the company, and you can learn from it.
