Is your deck safe? Bet these people though theirs was.

With the warm weather here we will start spending more time outdoors. One popular feature to a home Deckcan be a deck. While a deck might be a great space to enjoy the outdoors or entertain, it can be deadly.

It is estimated that at least 20 million decks are in need of repair of replacement and out of the 2 million decks built a year only 40% of those are built safely. These structures seem easy to build but they need to be structurally sound and able to support large amounts of weight and resist uplift from wind.

Even if it was built properly maintaining the deck is very important. Decay, insects, corrosion, and damage can greatly affect its stability. This is the time of year to have your deck inspected since most deck collapses happen in the summer. The majority of the decks that collapse are from separation at the supporting structure. Most injuries happen from railing failure.

Even seemingly safe decks can have dangers.  This recent deck collapse video shows how fast things can happen.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRP2g3I8Q98  It was amazing that no one was hurt. Don't let your deck be the one that collapses. Have a thorough inspection on a regular basis.

Good post.  Every community has decks that need repair.

As we approach the time for summer activities on our decks, it is a good time to take a close look to see if they are safe for our family and friends.

Roy, a good deck can be a great asset but a bad deck can be dangerous. Decks are popular everywhere so I hope people all over get them inspected.
