Arlington Cemetery-Honoring Our Veterans On Memorial Day

Arlington Cemetery Memorial Day Flags

Every year the Friday before Memorial Day weekend members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment  place flags on all of the grave sites at Arlington National Cemetery.  It's just one of many activities that happen this weekend in the DC area.  Of course Arlington National Cemetery is not the only location that honors our veteran's this weekend but it is certainly one of the most poignant.

Cindy ~ Every year my daughter makes it a point to get out to Arlington to visit as she lives in DC.. This year she is away, but will be making the trip soon. Her uncle served many years ago and she goes to represent the entire family... and say Thank you!

Janis-how thoughtful of your daughter.  The area will be packed this weekend with the thousands who come to DC for Rolling Thunder and other events in the area.

I have never been there when the flags are being placed and I can imagine just how sombering such an event is. Like Rolling Thunder it is on my bucket list. Happy Memorial Day to you and your family.

It is so difficult at times to view the large number of graves in our national cemeteries.... so many have given their lives to protect us.

A wonderful tribute to all the great Americans that gave their lives to keep us free.  I come from a long line of veterans, but have never been to see Arlington Cemetary.

Hi Cindy, When I am DC, I never fail to take at leasy one early morning walk through Arlington. It often rains and I am prepared to spend as much time as it takes to get through the various parts of the grounds. To me it is one of the most moving places in our capital.

Martha-it's a sight to see all the flags in the cemetery.  They don't stay as long as the wreaths at Christmas do.  They will be picked up Monday night.

William-it is hallowed ground and should be treated as such by those who visit.  All anyone has to do is go to Section 60 which is where the latest graves are to realize how costly our conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have been.
