Cock-a-doodle-doo! Roosters face sex-discrimination in Hayden, Idaho

Roosters Banned in Hayden IdahoAs is the case in most north Idaho communities, chickens are permissible in the town of Hayden, Idaho as long as they are cooped up.  But the Hayden city council this week clarified that rowdy and rambunctious roosters are not welcome.

In spite of admitting to receiving only one or two complaints each year about the boisterous early morning cock-a-doodle-dooing of a rogue rooster, the city of Hayden has now officially banned the boys.

The new ordinance now clarifys that the term "chicken" is limited to hens.  Leaving zero room for misinterpretation, the ordinance dealing with domesticated fowl spells it right out, "Roosters are not allowed."

I often ride past this beautiful, upscale chicken coop on my weekend bike rides down to Honeysuckle Beach on Hayden Lake.  These are some enviable digs for some fortunate chickens.  Now, when riding by I will smile at the thought of a new, somber mood amongst the city girls residing in the hen houses in Hayden.

Talk about not being PC. Being from Mars, I would have to object to the male species being excluded. The $64 question, how does one make chicks without the male involved. If it is possible, you can tell I am not a farm boy. :-)) Found your post through your making Patricia's top 10 list. Congrats and cheers cvc

What about the existing roosters?  Are they going to the big cast iron skillet in the sky??  And I wish I could "thumb's up" Fernando's Foghorn Leghorn comment.  Hilarious!

Well now, that's just sad!  We have feral chickens here in Fair Oaks CA, and they roam all over the village.  Our roosters don't limit their crowing to early morning - they crow off and on all day and early evening, but no one would dare to suggest outlawing them.  Our Fair Oaks chickens are famous!

Quite an amusing little story, but definitely not something I would read in our local paper.

I can't believe this. This seems so far fetched to me. There again different strokes for different folks.

That law is against nature.  Those poor hens now with out their guys.  That is unfair to the hens and the roosters.

I love roosters. To me their cock a doodling becomes background noise, like the surf or wind. There aren't any around here, but I fondly remember them when we're visiting Kauai. I actually look forward to them waking me up.

Janna - How could I not stop by and read this after seeing your title?

It seems overstepping if they only get the occasional complaint.

Where does the city council think little chickens come from? The grocery store? Funny post.

Janna, I think the Hayden City council members may all need to have their meds adjusted.  This is crazy.  I certainly hope the Roosters who currently reside there will be able to live out their natural life.  It would not surprise me if the council members decide to do away with them.

My town also allows chickens but not roosters, and they cite the noise as the reason. However, if they were really concerned about noise, they'd have to get rid of the dogs.

I totally agree with Foghorn Leghorn.  I say, I say, I say the government really needs to get them some business.

Our neighbor's dog has been annoying us for years!

It's hard to believe such a fuss is being made over

the occasional and intermittant crowing of roosters,

when dogs will bark unceasingly for many hours on

end!  Fair's fair.  Citizens should have the right to

have something done about nuisance dogs if roosters

are deemed to be intolerable!

Roosters are so beautiful, and are a valuable part of

the flock.  They stand guard as the hens scratch about

for tidbits to eat.  They round up the hens and get them

inside at the first sign of danger.  I have admired my

rooster for his self-sacrificing nature, who will protect

his hens to the point of giving his own life for them.

It's true that some roosters can be aggressive, but

much depends on the breed of chickens selected.  My

flock is Americauna, known for their docile nature.  My

rooster doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body, and

has always been a gentleman.  The flock is closed in the

coop nightly, so early morning crowing is muffled until I

open the door.  Children scream, cars rev, dogs bark, and

roosters crow.  We should all try to tolerate each other's

reasonable noises, and be considerate of each others by being

aware of the noises we inflict on our neighbors.

P.S.  (Dear neighbor, Please tend to your very unhappy dog

who barks all day and night unceasingly.  He's in need of some

attention and love, and we're ready for some relief.)

Janna -- I guess the Hayden City Council will not want to vacation on Kauai then, as there are chickens (including roosters) running free all over the island (that  is what happens when a hurricane comes through and knocks things over.)

Hello Janna,

Wait until Washington gets wind of this discrimination...I can just see the bill winging its way through the Halls of Justice to rectify this now (LOL).
