Low-Cost Kitchen Improvements for Any Home

In the most recent   National Association of Realtors Magazine, they highlighted a few low-cost options for sprucing up your kitchen.

Here are a few of my favorites:

-Paint: The least expensive way to change the feel of a room.  Use eggshell rather than flat paint since the kitchen is a heavily used room.

-Backsplash Tile:  Do it from the base of the cabinets down.  A full 18 inches.  Try laying them vertically rather than horizontally for a less-expected look.

-Countertops:  If granite is too expensive, choose a laminate.  A texture laminate is a better choice to hide scratching or burn marks.

-Appliances:  Going with the classic stainless steel appeals universally.  If you can’t afford to replace all of your appliances focus on the refrigerator.

-Flooring:  Replacing smaller tiles with a larger tiles makes the room seem larger and is easier to clean and maintain.

CY, I was just over at a Kitchen/Bath contractor I know recently and they have some great new laminates that look very good. A great option for the those who want the look of granite but do not have eh budget for it.

You have some good ideas.  However, I disagree with your advice about stainless steel appliances.  I am a fan of matching appliances (same brand and same color), even if they are white, black or bisque.
