Is your web presence in jeopardy… who owns the rights to your domain name?

Like real estate, domain names carry a deed. It's called the domain name registrant. Some know this, most do not. Why is it a problem, because the value of the domain lies with the registrant . Therefore, if you check on the whois registry and a name registrant isn't yours there can be a problem, maybe a huge problem. So what, you may say? Well think of it like this say you built 10 years of marketing and branded your website so well that people just know you by mytownrealty.com, leads are pouring in, traffic to your site is growing, and then all of a sudden you get a letter from your web design company....Mr. Smith, the registration of mytownrealty.com is about to expire, it will cost you $20,000 to renew it, or instead of 25 dollars a month for domain hosing it now costs you $700.00. How does this happen you say? Well think of it like this if you are the landlord of a store that sees hundreds of customers walking through your doors, he knows that your making a killing in his building, and he's collecting the same rent year after year, the lease expires and then what? He raises his rent. You, say no way am I going to pay that kind of money, I'll move. Well here you can't, your name is your business, and the person or company that is the registrant may hold the key to your future success.

Something to think about.

Good points Anthony. I make sure that I own the domain and that it is not leased out. Although I do know of people that have had exactly what you are talking about happen to them.

Interesting.  So the best way to determine ownership is through whois?  Do you know of any registrars who are known for pulling of stunts like this?

I did not know that this could happen.  I have 2 domain names through GoDaddy.com, I did not realize that there may be another level of ownership beyond what I paid for.  Does anyone know if GoDaddy abuses their customers this way?

So people have had this happen from smaller unknown web design firms who buy domain names for their clients. I have heard something going on with GODadday, boosting price of domains on past popularity. However the actual domain registrant has title to the domain, anything else is a lease which  3rd party can charge you whatever he thinks it's worth upon renewal or change of design companies.
