First, I want to apologize. I am truly sorry that anyone anywhere ever has had a bad experience with a real estate agent. If we all lived in "Beth Land", this would not happen. However, it does. Just like a meal, would you never eat out again if you had one bad restaurant experience? Of course not, you might not go back to that restaurant, but you would definitely try others. Your house and its acquisition or disposition are far more important than a $50 meal. Use a real estate professional to preserve your sanity and your investment.
So, let's talk about questions to ask whether you are buying or selling. An interview is the best way to find a new agent. Have a prepared list of questions. Here are some examples:
- How long have you been in the business?
- What is your average list price to sales price ratio for sellers? For Buyers?
- What is your marketing plan for my home? What is your strategy for finding me a home?
- What kind of forms will I need to sign? Can we review those?
- When am I committed to working with you?
- What else do I need to know?
- What are the top three things that set you apart from other agents?
- X or Y is most important to me. How do you handle that?
- Who else will I work with? Many agents have teams in their office. You might talk to someone else, and it is nice to know who that person is.
- What happens if I am unhappy with your service?
- Can I have a few references from past clients?
