Occoquan Regional Park in Lorton VA is a small slice of tranquility just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia. The park managed by the Northern Virginia Park Authority offers not only wooded walking paths, views of the Occoquan River but also contains significant pieces of Lorton VA history.
Walking along the wooded scenic trail you find a marker labeled DC 1910. The park was originally part of the land owned by the DC Reformatory located in Lorton. The main buildings of the reformatory are now the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center. The park contains the only remaining brick kiln used to build the reformatory buildings as well as historic buildings in DC. The park is also the site of Turning Point Plaza remembering the women who were imprisoned for fighting for the right to vote.
Boaters can launch their power boats onto the Occoquan River and kayakers enjoy a special launch area as well. On weekends you can take a tour on Miss Rivershore to the historic Town of Occoquan or along the river to look for eagles in Belmont Bay. Once a month Earnie Portia the Mayor of Occoquan leads a historic kayak tour from the park to the town and back. For more information on the park and the summer events check out the Occoquan Regional Park website.
And if you are waterfowl Occouqan Regional Park is a great place to preen your feathers before flying off to your next desination.
