Adventures in the Huron Soup Kitchen

We have a new Baby!!

In fact, we have TWO.                                     New Meat Slicer

New Mixer

With the assistance of a Grant from the Sandusky Erie County Foundation and the generosity of Dave Cuthbertson with Restaurant, Equipment and Repair, Tim Parry with Pizza House West and Mark Claus with Breckenridge Kitchen Equipment, we are now the proud owners of a Commercial Mixer and Meat Slicer.

When preparing to make mashed potatoes, Nadine, one of our prep cooks, would almost always take charge of peeling and dicing all 50-60 pounds of potatoes.  When it was time to actually mash the cooked potatoes it was done with a masher on a three foot extension and was a total group effort.  We Hard work mashing potatoeswould take turns with the masher while someone else monitored the butter, milk and seasonings.  We were so grateful when Nadine’s son, Jacob stepped into our kitchen routine and became the designated “masher”.  But it was still hard work and was a job we were always glad to have behind us.

The new Mixer was a godsend.  Not only does it simplify the job of mashing the potatoes, it also makes them fluffier and cuts the time to prepare them exponentially.

Picture this…….All eight of us in the kitchen leaning over the bowl when the power was turned on and …..just watching it do it’s magic.  We were like little children with a new toy.  We couldn’t seem to get enough of watching it work.

We haven’t had occasion to use the new slicer yet, but come the end of June and we will probably have the same reaction of wonder and awe at what a wonderful, work-saving addition it will be to our kitchen.

We are thrilled with our new additions and want to offer a sincere thank you to all who were instrumental in making this happen.

Hi Kalene,  We are a small town soup kitchen.  We only serve the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month.  We rely in great part on donations from Second Harvest Food Pantry.   On the evenings we serve, we average 165-180 meals.  Thanks for your kind words.
