Frequently Asked: Can I live and work year-round in Door County?

Real Estate Agent with The Kellstrom Ray Agency, Inc. (Est. 1948)

We frequently get asked about family-owned businesses in Door County and if it is possible to live where one works in Door County year-round.  I was able to count on my fingers a number of family-owned business in the area without even really trying, from the Johnsons at Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant, to the Kersebetts and Ecology Sports, to the Daubner family at the Sister Bay Bowl, to dozens of others.  In fact, maybe this area is very unique in that there are a LOT of family owned businesses.

However, we do face an attainable housing shortage in northern Door County.   Many businesses purchase and subsidize housing for college and international employees.  People looking to open retirement businesses in this area are in for a good year, with low interest rates and some interesting opportunities, including bank-owned businesses.

Can I live and work year-round in Door County?  We work hardest from April through November, but it's possible to live here and enjoy the good life--low crime, good schools, and friendly people.  My next blog will contain some commercial opportunities for people looking for a lifestyle change.
