Verrado Annular Eclipse

By
Industry Observer

A Special  Verrado Sunset on Sunday, May 20, 2012 was historic.  It had been eighteen years since an annular eclipse had been visible in the United States.   The  residents of Verrado, Arizona were among the privileged that witnessed this rare event.    The eclipse was visible along a narrow band running through the southwestern U.S. including Arizona with a partial eclipse falling south of the Grand Canyon.   Several of us got together and had a solar eclipse party at a neighbor's home which turned out to be an unforgettable event.   The next astronomical rarity for Verrado and the U.S. will be the transit of Venus on June 5th of this year.  This will not happen again in our lifetime.  Another great opportunity for a neighborhood party here in Verrado.  Why not .....with more than 51 parks and a beautiful community at the foothills of the White Tank Mountains here in the west valley, views of the city and sky are outstanding.

For more information on the annular eclipse see Sky and Telescope article " The May 20th Annular Eclipse"- May 2012 issue.   Scientific American carried an excellent article on the transit of Venus in their "Crossing the Sun: The Last Transit of Venus until 2117" in the article published by Jay Pasachoff  on May 31, 2012.   Feel free to contact me as well for information on both events or living here in Verrado.

We got a pretty good look at the eclipse here in our area also.  Nice picture.

Tim:

Yes it was quite a beautiful sight.  It seemed the entire valley had great views.  The weather was picture perfect and the neighbors were great.

Ellie.....sent the response to you but it appeared it came back to me.  It's above but I'll repeat it here:

Sorry about that Ellie.  Unfortunately a few locations, namely the east coast of the U.S. was not as lucky as we were here in Phoenix.  Perhaps the June 5th event may prove to be more interesting to you.  It will be available in your location on June 5th during the day and until the sun sets.  Just call one of your museums, local astronomy club or perhaps someone in your neighborhood that might have a telescope.  This will be a once in a lifetime event.  Have a great weekend and thanks for your response.

More information on the Venus transit can be read here:"Crossing the Sun: The Last Transit of Venus until 2117"

Good luck Ellie

Seeing your camera I understand why that photo of Venus' transit was so gorgeous.  Thank you for visiting my blog.

Thanks for visiting and commenting.  We did use this event as an excuse for another party here in Verrado with our neighbors.  Thanks for covering the transit in your blog.  You did a great job of educating and providing follow up information.  Have a great summer.

Ken, this is a great photo of the eclipse. The partial eclipse photo could be framed!

Thanks for the compliment Sharon.  The big event was the transit of Venus which I'm positive was seen in Dallas on Tuesday.  Truly a  once in a life time experience for all of us.  I'll be doing a post on that some time today.
