When driving around Putnam County and looking out the window the view is as likely as not to look like this photo. Of course more times than not the cows are black and white, not black or white. Putnam County just happens to be the Dairy Capitol of Georgia. So when you are drinking that next glass of milk any where in our state... I might have the cow it came from in my lifetime. In fact, it could be one of the cows that have been paraded through the streets of downtown Eatoton.
Cows paraded in the street you say? Yes. Once a year on the first Saturday of June we celebrate our Dairy industry, it's called the Dairy Festival. We have a Dairy Family, we have a annual Diary Queen (and I don't mean that place that sells blizzards, although we have one of those too) There's a road race, a crafts fair, a bar-be-que, stage entertainment, a parade, free ice cream and so much more.
If you haven't checked your calandar the first Saturday in June this year is June 2, 2012. Please don't try to get there right at 9 to 11 either. We close the roads for the parade... no getting in or out during the parade. So get there early and get a good seat for for a view of the parade then stay the afternoon and enjoy the crafts, a barbeque lunch and you can count on some wonderful singing and maybe even some square dancin'. Mayfield will be there with the big brown cow and free ice cream. And I know that the "blooming onion" truck will be back. There is always a line, but it's worth it so I just wait until it's my turn to order my blooming onion.
There's also lots of hugging and handshaking every year too, Some Putnam County natives just visit for this annual event if they've moved away and those of us who stayed... we are happy to welcome them back for the day. And if you come... jot down my cell number and give me a jingle, I'll be happy to meet you too.
