masdevallia orchid carpinteria california

This beautiful orchid is known as a Masdevallia orchid or a cloud forest orchid. It is native to high altitude cloud forests, and it requires cool conditions and constant moisture.  There are 500 types of these orchids with vibrant colors from bright yellow to oranges,as well as deep and vibrant reds.  They are native to South American rain forests in Bolivia, Columbia and Equador.  They are named for Jose Masdeval, a physician and botanist who introduced to the court of Charles II in Spain.  (from Wiki)

Our orchid greenhouses are producing them, which is where we found these at Westerlay in Carpinteria.  We are so delighted to be privvy to all varieties, and we were told that will do well in a home with filtered light.  Water every few days by placing the pot in a container of water for a few minutes.  Take out and let it drain well before putting it in the decorative container.    We love having orchids in our home or bringing them as gifts as they are long lasting.

Happy Saturday, Cheers, Ron & Alexandra

I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel....I can't remember the rest of the words.  But, these orchids seem to know the whole song.  Gorgeous, and yellow is one of my favorite colors.   Have fun!

you guys love flowers so much, you must have a garden of your own, right?  How many species do you have, and how did you decide which ones to plant?

Alexandra, they certainly are beautiful, and not sure if they would grow here or not.

Hi Alexandra, I must admit, I have not seen that orchid before (Masdevallia ) and if I did, I didn't recognize it as such. Thanks for sharing this and now to go find one, LOL

Alexandra... I never would have guessed that any orchid required cool climate to grow, so that's for the information! That Masdevallia is stunning! Orchids are just spectaular and so unique - just like you and Ron!

Cloud forest is just a beautiful name...it would make a good name for a color in a line of eco-paints. :) It also makes a beautiful orchid - hope you're having a wonderful Sunday and are soaking up the area beauty.

Dear Suzanne,

That is a great way to characterize the flower, maybe you should have writing musicals as an avocation1

Jeff,

At this moment we are not doing much gardening, however in our home in LA I had over 150 rose bushes which I pruned myself, numerous fruit trees, about 50 orchids, etc, and lots and lots of flower beds.  I took a major trip to Home Depot to get flats of flowrs.  In Napa we had a lot of land an enormous raised bed vegetable garden and about 50 rose bushes and over 70 orchids...so we are on hiatus, although we love flowers.

Toni,

I know what you mean, and everytime I visit an orchidarium, I learn something new.  It is hard to keep up with all of the varieties, and I know that there are species that have not been named or identified as of yet...lots of work for those botanists.

janeAnne,

Who'd thunk it that my eye would be drawn to the very one you got for Mother's Day, and I would take it upon myself to photograph this beauty, and I would be helpful to you...love the universe matching us up at that very moment.

Sharon,

Ditto,

Sussie,

I had not seen this one before either,

Rebecca,

They will do fine indoors under the right conditions.

William,

Hope you find one, and you are always welcome to come up and we can meet and have a cup of coffee or lunch together.

Patricia,

Thank you for the compliment, we have always been contrarians and do not like to blend, and we love the uniquenes of orchids.

Larry and Sheila,

Everytime we bring one, eveyone squeals with delight...Orchids are so unique that they capture your imagination.

Debb,

Yes indeed that would make a good line of paint.  I love the thought of a cloud forest.  Thanks for that imaginative thought.
