Responding to comments to for my "Driving without GPS" blog

The last entry I made was about using free traffic/map services on a web-enabled phone as a way to avoid biting the bullet and buying a GPS.

One realtor in CA pointed out that my method (which requires typing things into your phone and pushing buttons for subsequent  turning information using Google Maps) might lead to more expense than simply buying a GPS could lead to in the form of accidents and the resulting injuries to property, body and your bank account.

The realtor is right to point out that using the your phone in this manner could lead to accidents costing thousands of lost dollars, but I did note that people should not use it while driving but to pull over as needed.  As I said, I have used this method when lost and it helped me out in a pinch.

I have to admit that I did buy a GPS afterall.  I got the Magellen 4040 that I had picked out on Amazon.com on one of those days when they offer 50% off.  When I saw it for 50% off, I jumped at it, and I am happy that I did. It has worked wonderfully for me. The things I like best about it are:

  • it not only tells me to turn left or right, but also the name of the street onto which I must turn

  • after it has told me which way to turn next, an arrow indicating that direction shows up in the lower left part of the screen -- in case I wasn't paying attention to "Ellen" (the name I have given the voice --> MagELLEN) or that day when I hear right I think left, that little arrow helps

  • it has a BIG 4" screen with a beige/light green background during the day and a darker one @ night (so I'm not distracted by all that light on the screen @ night)

  • it's easy yo sue the think -- no manual reading necessary.
So there you have it.  A stand alone GPS is a good investment for a realtor, but when I forget the thing or am a passenger in someone else's car and we get lost, I'll still use my old web-enabled phone to get to Google Maps, and thus my destination.
