Hurricane Season is here.  From June 1, 2012 through November 30, 2012, we will need to be prepared and remain aware of the tropics and what storms are heading in our direction.  Anyone who experienced Hurricane Ike in 2008 has a better idea of how to handle an approaching storm and what to expect in its aftermath.

In the Houston Chronicle yesterday, there was a great article by Eric Berger that covered just what a hurricane can do to our area, not only in terms of water damage but also in terms of wind damage.  With the various studies done for the city, a few items will roll out in the next couple of weeks that should prove to be useful tools for homeowners.

  • An update of the Houston Hide from the Wind website will expand information to Harris and surrounding counties.  This website offers real-time estimates of wind speeds by zip codes, based on the National Hurricane Center data.
  • A new website that allows you to enter an address to view potential wind, flooding & surge threats to property using different storm strenghths.

It's important for residents to understand the risks involved in storms, especially the larger hurricanes that can cause massive amounts of damage.  The more we can learn about this topic, the better prepared we'll be.  Follow Eric Berger at the Chronicle for further information.

I remember living in Kingwood. Folks would say, "we are 90 miles from the coast, why leave". As the crow flies it is more like 30 miles from water. Hurricanes don't take the interstate!
