Disputing Property Values- Any Suggestions?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Alpha Prosperity Management

Do any of you experienced real estate professionals have any advice or suggestions on how to dispute property value increases? I know it's a good thing most times but it can get a little scary for those first-time home buyers who may have just purchased their home, especially when they get that bill.

What advice do you give to your clients about property taxes?

In Modesto we have to appeal to the tax assessor. It varies from state to state.

Yes Courtney, you will appeal to the Tax Collection agency. I knew a man that dropped his taxes by standing in front of them and saying the same thing over an over and over and over until they were sick of him. Finally they just dropped his taxes. He just kept saying, "I don't understand"? It worked. Later in the rain~Deb

They normally have a form located on the Appraisal District's website that the property owner can print up to dispute the appraiser's opinion.  Not sure about Missouri City - but tad.org, dallascad.org are a couple very useful sites in my day to day business (even as a loan officer).

Courtney - I know many people that protest their taxes and do get them reduced somewhat.  Of course they just go up the next year.

Thanks for sharing Matthew, Nathan and Candy. I am familiar with the procedures that people can use to dispute property taxes. I was just curious if there were some tricks that other people have used and were successful with.

Debra, that was a good trick and didn't take much work on his part. All in all in may have lost a little time from his day. Thanks for sharing that.

Oh yes!  The best way to dispute the property values is to call O'Conner and Associates.  I don't have any affiliation with them other than they do a good job for clients of mine.  They will fight to reduce the tax and if they can't, you don't pay them anything.  What could be better than free?

I have heard of O'Conner and Associates, and people do say they are great at what they do, but David, do they handle residential? I thought they were mainly commercial.

David, I didn't know there was such a group. Are they a member of Active Rain? Sounds like good information to have in the tool box.
