WordPress Image Problem - A Solution

By
Industry Observer

Margaret Woda's comment here got me wondering ... "I am missing something in this WordPress/Image/Internet Explorer/Two-Dot/Headache business.... what am I missing?"

Aww, man.  This might be the answer.  Here are the basic steps to adding an image with the WP Visual Editior in either WordPress.org or WordPress.com.

In the lower panel Upload, you click browse, and choose an image from your computer.  You click "open" to select, and then "Upload"

Then you select either "Thumbnail" or "Full size" and "Send to editor".

Then you click on the the image to select it, and click on the little tree icon to set alignment and spacing.

But wait, hold everything.  You need to also fill in the image dimensions.  It seems WordPress (for me at any rate) doesn't automatically sense the image dimensions when uploaded with Internet Explorer.  Fill the the dimensions, and then click "Update".

Remembering to manually fill in the image dimensions has solved the WordPress/Interent Explorer/Two Dot Image Headache for me.

Thanks for your excellent tutorials Cheryl.  I've got a question regarding adding widgets.  I'm using something called the Sadish Theme and cannot figure out how to add tags for delicious & technorati. Have you had any experience with customizing widgets in wordpress.com?

CJ - I had a terrible time with picture sizes on my wp.org blog with a particular theme.  Once I changed the theme (which took a while to think of that and I can not take credit for the idea of trying to change the theme), problem solved.  I am enjoying all of your wp info.

OK Cheryl - You've shamed me into working on my wordpress blog.  I figured out how to put in a custom header picture and add a sidebar picture.  I would like to be able to put a few buttons in there with links to my website but I have not figured out how to do that yet.  I was able to get the buttons on there but could not link - not sure if that is possible.  I am using wordpress.com.

My blog looks a million times better than it did.  I'd still like to get some more permanent stuff on the sidebar.  Thanks for the push.  I may even redirect the URL at some point.  Woo hoo I'm getting so tech savvy.  LOL

Cheryl - does it have to be all caps or is Realtors® OK?  I just learned how to make that little ® so I'm putting it all over the place!

I didn't know you could add pages!!!!  I added the page headings - I'll have to put stuff in them tomorrow.  Wow, this is great, my blog is really starting to look like a custom website.

Muareen --  I don't think it has to be all caps.  Hopefully someone who know about that sort of stuff will show up.

Aren't pages cool?  TypePad offers them too now.  You basically can make a blog function just like a website.

Cheryl!!!! I love you. Do you have any idea how much hair I've lost trying to post pics? Lucky me I have enough hair for 5 people.

Thank you so much for these. You seriously have no idea how helpful it is.

Yeah.

I'm trying to play along. I'm glad he's doing that. The way I figure, if I keep reading it, and seeing it, eventually it will filter down. It's very much like total emmersion language learning. I seriously have no idea what 90% of what he is saying means, but, someday it will have to make sense, right? And now that he's drawing pictures- lol- it's a bit easier.

Here's a question I haven't figured out: I have a helluva time posting multiple photos. They don't want to stack. No that's not right. They stack until I publish, then they just mosey over to the side-by-side right on top of my sidebar, or wherever they want to show up that day. Argh. Really truly argh.

Oh wait. Maybe it's paragraphs, right? I need to manually add the html for paragraph? I bet that's the answer.

Cheryl,

Thanks for helping out this senior C.  Do I have to register for a typepad account in order to comment on da Blogmother?  I'll park for an answer.  You are a wonderful person, and a great resource.

Mike -- No you don't need to have a TypePad account.  That TypeKey Authentication thingy is "(Optional (Commenters may choose to authenticate with TypeKey.) "  (Copied from TypePad)

But that said, I just turned it off.  It's Typepad's default setting.  I simply never thought about it.

Thanks, Cheryl.  I just turned Ginger Wilcox on to you; she dumped GoDaddy recently because of WordPress issues, so I gave her a link to daBlogmother and your tutorials.

Have to say I find it a little amusing that I am posting WordPress techniques on a blog hosted by TypePad.  :-)  (Mother is on TypePad)

Oh my gosh.  I just looked at my comment list on Mother.  It never occurred to me people might actually comment there.  Oh my.

Terry:  I think it just comes down to "brain-fit".

One question might be:  Is it a single author blog, or multiple author?  And what is the skill level of the authors?

For multi-authors blogs where the authors are ordinary people-not tech people - TypePad may be the better option.    I find I can pretty much duplicate any WordPress theme or effect pretty easily in TypePad.

For a more experienced, tech-savvy person, WordPress.org might be the choice.

WordPress.com is free ... but the customization options are limited.

Teri, you know what just occured to me?  If you want a strip of images in a row, I think I'd just build a collage in Photoshop Elements, and upload it as a single image.  :-)
