Mom and the Kids

Morning dove family at our Carlsbad house

We caught the first glimpse of Mom Morning Dove and the kids today up under the eaves at the front entrance to our house.

While it's  protected are, it seems like a dumb place for a skittish bird to build a nest, but somehow she made it (as she did last year with 3 broods of 2 young ones each) and survived people coming and going, and porch lights with sensors.

The parent doves provide great entertainment for our cats, who watch them come and go from the living room window, and no doubt the kids will be leaving the nest before too long.  It will be time to start another nest full.

UPDATE June 11

The kids have not yet left the nest but seem to be getting ready. Parents are around, encouraging, and the kids have ventured out of the nest to sit on the ledge but so far that's it. Getting close I think.

Jeff, we are big bird fans around here and have regular "customers" that visit each morning for the bird seed the kids put out!  We call it the "bird buffet".  Thanks for sharing pictures of mama and her babies.  So precious!!

Jeff, this is a great picture! I love having bird nests in the yard in the spring and summer, but I can never get close enough for a good picture.

Three sets of twins in one year!  I sure think God knew what he was doing when making human reproduction a bit slower!!  Still pretty darn amazing to me.  Thanks for catching the family portrait!

Hi Jeff, I love the Morning Doves and when the nest is not hanging over the front entrance like recently on a listing, these birds are wonderful. However, if the nest is on the walkway into a person's front door, expect the need for a daily cleaning, :-)

How fun to see them as babies and grow up.  My cats would have  field day.  I just went to a home yesterday by a pond w/ tons of canadian geese and mentioned how my cats would be thrilled to move there.

Ah, Jeff!  It's those cats that will teach these baby birds crucial survival skills!  Mine went nuts when a bird nested on my back verandah, and they managed to make it.  Great shot.

Sonja - I love having the avian wildlife, even under the eaves! And it keeps our indoor cats entertained!

Rose - this is right outside the front door and with my Cybershot camera it worked out well. And no one flew away!

Bridget - ha ha. Yeah. last year was something. She barely kicked them out and them they made more. This year things have slacked off. One nest didn't make it. :(

William - so true. It does get a bit messy. And this cree threw out the old nest from last year to build a new one. Quite the mess, but worth it.

Debbie - oh yes, the cats are having a field day. Fortunately the birds are kinda secluded and I'm not sure they even know about the cats - but the cats, particularly our Maine Coon Cat knows ALL about it.

Judy - thanks, I so enjoy them myself. A year or two ago I was able to capture a nest of hummingbirds in our yard. VERY special

Pat - ha ha, so true. We have lots of lizards outside, too, and a rabit or two which provide great entertainment, and a bit of frustration, for the cats.

Great picture Jeff.  She must feel very safe at your house as she keeps coming back.
