For the last two days there has been coastal flooding on Thompson Creek in Stevensville Maryland. High tide according to the DNR's Maryland Tide Finder occurred at 7:05 AM on Wednesday, June 7th, 2012 at Kent Island Narrows. The moon, according to the chart was 97% visible. The coincidence of the two made for deep water at the public landing at Thompson Creek. As you can see from the picture, below, the ramp and parking lot were awash in tidal back flow. The handles the ladders on the public boat ramp are just barely visible in the deep water where the piers reach out.
Seeing the high water yesterday and again today while walking Rocky reminded me that your home can flood at any time, not just during major storms like hurricanes or monsoons. Rocky and I stopped this morning to take a picture of the flooded dog house, pictured below. Yesterday it was further awash and under water. The National Flood Insurance Program offers more than just protection for your home with flood insurance, it offers you piece of mind.
Coastal flooding is a hazard of living on the water on the Chesapeake Bay or one of the many rivers and creeks that feed into it. While the risk of flooding in low lying properties can be high, the risk is often far out weighted by the beauty and awe that comes with living at water's edge. A coastal lifestyle is not an option, it's mandatory for many home buyers (find homes for sale on the Western Shore or the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay). The area around Thompson Creek has a history of flooding as the summer solstice approaches. It remains to be seen whether or not NOAA will post advisories again tomorrow for coastal flooding in Stevensville Maryland for Thompson Creek and other low lying areas.
