Home Stager with Home Star Staging

Ever wonder what it's like to be a home stager ? Would you like to job shadow one? Now you can for free and online! SAR Training student with Annie Pinsker Brown

A couple of months ago I was contacted by the owner of an online job search resource Job Shadow.com  that focuses on sharing all types of careers with students, professionals and anyone in the job market looking for truthful information on careers that may be of interest to them as they enter the job market or transition into new fields

The Job Shadow interviews focus on real people working in real professions and all were asked to give honest, useful and insightful information to help others understand the jobs we do.

I was honored to be asked to contribute my story as a home stager.

Once I received the list of questions I took several days to compose my answers. It gave me pause at times to realize that some would be staging professionals would be looking at this as a potential resource for starting their own home staging businesses

I took the task with the utmost respect and seriousness and I hope that in my answers I would provide someone the real life experSAR Training: Family room staged by staging studentience of a working home staging professional.

On a very regular basis I receive many inquiries about starting a home staging business. These interesting inquires usually involve lengthy emails and even phone calls to help them understand the staging business. As my own home staging business has grown, I often do not have the time I'd like to be able to respond in detail. Now I use this interview to answer them & I encourage you to use the link if you also get these same types of inquiries and be able to share this with them if you find the information of value.

Karen ~ What an interesting resource!  I'm bookmarking this post to come back to look at your links when I return from my staging projects today.  Thanks for telling us about it, and for continuing to help educate the public about home staging's benefits for consumers and real estate professionals!

(BTW I just noticed that with this comment, I've just reached 500K points, so thanks for helping me get there :-)

Certainly a very interesting proposition. I would jump on the idea if I had the slightest interest in this. What a blessing you are. I hope all is well in the Otto home.

Hi Maureen, it really is an interesting website and the interviewees are all asked the same questions. I think the more others know about our profession the more they'll understand what we do, why they need us and why the investment in staging (whether starting a business or hiring a stager) is so important and what the true benefits and pitfalls are.

Hi Loreena! You already have some idea about this profession I'm sure! Thank you for your kind words.  I see the growing Yeo family on Facebook updates, all is well here as my nest is getting emptier with one leaving for his first apartment in NYC soon!

Karen, that is pretty awesome to be selected. Congratulations for stepping up, when many would shy away and/or not be honest. I read a lot of honesty in that article, like how you didnt really make money the first three years. I think that some people will look at the success now and figure 'i can do that' but thats because no one told them how hard they worked upfront to make it what it is today (not saying you dont work hard now). But its especially hard to go to work when you are not seeing the financial benefits. You have to truly love what you do, and have the heart and energy to do the work to make it successful. Great article.

Hi John, thank you so much for taking the time to not only comment on this blog but to read the interview. It means so much to me that you did that. I've always told myself that if money were the measure of success for most people, we'd all might think we're failing because success to one person may mean something totally different to another and money is not the true measure of success for anyone really, it would be kind of sad actually if you were rich but hated what you did or your life really wasn't your own.  It helps no one entering a field to not understand the true experiences we face and the fact that I also help others start their own staging businesses is also a way for me to help them realize what they may experience as well. There is a rarely a "get rich quick" scheme or business that is for real, staging is no different. Thank you again John, I really appreciate it!

It is Sharon and I'm grateful for it!

Wow, what a well-written, honest article, Karen! Kudos to you for explaining that a start-up business (of any kind) requires diligent procedures to be in place, saavy marketing skills and your own financial resources "before" you start to see a paycheck. Congratulations on this awesome opportunity. You're a wonderful ambassador for our profession.

BTW, love you're future "junking/up-cycling" idea...I was in Austin/Round Top in April for Marburger Farms Antique Sale and thought I'd die and go to heaven:)

Thanks so much for taking the time to read it Kim. I also appreciate your kind words as I do try to avail myself as a staging "ambassador" as you said.  There's still a lot of misinformation out there! We actually all should especially that our profession is still in the early stages of growth and finally getting some "sticking" factor going.

As for the junking/upcycling store... I kinda got one off the ground recently with a little antique mall booth I recently opened last month called: Birds of a Feather. I have a FB page I'm utilizing as a "website" of sorts. Would be honored for you to check it out!

Hi Karen,

You gave a great list of answers for the interview.  Very precise and informative.  I think anyone looking into a home staging business would really be able to determine from your answers if this was the business for them.  What an honor to be asked to do this.
