William Kesling’s Skinner House at 1530 Easterly Terrace., in Silver Lake is a prime example of Streamline Moderne architecture.
This 1930’s architecture is a late version of the Art Deco style with its curving forms and long horizontal lines. The 1937 Skinner house is a 3 bedroom 2 bath home on a a 4,999sf lot in the Hills of Silver Lake South of the Reservoir. The living space is just over 2,000sf and displays many of the classic Streamline Moderne architectural features. Interestingly, it is mirrored by the Vanderpool House next door that was built one year earlier.
Curved walls, metal windows and hardwood floors make the Skinner House unique among homes currently on the market in Silver Lake. This house has been updated beautifully in keeping with the art deco style and the architect’s original intent.
Even the bathrooms reflect the art deco style with chrome fixtures, brightly tiled shower and the circular shapes so commonly found in architecture of this era.
During the 30’s William Kesling was Southern California’s most prolific Streamline Moderne, aka Modernistic, arch itects. He designed a number of Silver Lake homes, including the the Wilson House at 1831 Fanning Street which last sold in May 2007 for $1,130,575. Another of Kesling’s Silver Lake streamline moderne homes at 3217 Fernwood, the Adams House, was sold for $830,000 last year but, unlike the Skinner house on Easterly Terrace, was in need of updating.
