LESSON TO GROWING BUSINESS - LET GO!

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Here is a problem that comes up all too often.  A business owner or agency owner spends most of his time working in the business and virtually no time working on the business.Engaged Employees

Why is this problematic?  When you start your business you need to do everything or it does not get done. Sometimes you have time management issues but you must work through them.  Your business grows and you simply can't get it all done.  So you hire someone.

You are at the pinnacle of a growing business.  At this point you are now not only the owner but also a manager.

Here is what happens many times.  The owner hires an employee and continues to stay totally involved in his business.  The new employee asks a question, 'don't worry, I'll take care of that.  It's involved"  is the answer.

Before long the owner says the employee is not working out because the owner has to do everything himself.  What went wrong?

The owner did not engage his employee.  Explain, train, encourage, and ask for input.  Once you are certain the the employee understands encourage him to make decisions on his area.  Encourage his input.  Then monitor.  But gradually let go.  Learn to look at key measurements the indicate the employee is on track such as number of calls answer, complainsts resolved, orders processed, customer feedback.  Then you get out of the details.

Watching the measurement is called your DASHBOARD just like a car.  You monitor but you need to get out from under the hood.  Spend time on more stratgic elements of your business.  This will enable you to see oportunities.

Enjoy your new role of business owner.  You can't continue to be hands on!

The moral of this story is... if you are not ready to hire someone and interview perspective candidates to fill a position in need they have experience in then you shouldnt be hiring them. Either interview well, askk the right questions, do background checks, check references and then train them on how you need that task completed. If unsure let it be a learning in progress for you both. BUT if you arent going to train and want to do everything why on earth are you wasting your money for something you arent letting go of?

You are so right, Grant.  The idea to expand your capacity by bringing someone in...and if you are micromanaging stuff rather than enabling them to do more, you're not going to get very far.
